There is no reliable one-size-fits-all monthly cost. For a 24/7 YouTube stream, calculate electricity from the PC’s measured wall power and your local electricity rate. Then add any internet overage, paid services, or hardware costs that apply to you. For a 30-day month, the stream runs 720 hours: (average watts ÷ 1,000) × 720 × price per kWh.
That is the answer to “How much does a 24/7 YouTube stream cost with FFmpeg on a low-power Celeron PC?” The Celeron name alone does not tell you the whole computer’s power draw, whether it can encode your chosen stream reliably, or what your ISP may charge. Measure your setup and use the calculation below for a defensible estimate.
Calculate your monthly electricity cost
Use this formula, with power measured at the wall while the PC runs the FFmpeg setup you intend to use:
Electricity cost = (average wall draw in watts ÷ 1,000) × streaming hours × electricity price per kWh

For continuous streaming throughout a 30-day month, use 720 hours. Replace that with your actual hours if the stream is not on all month.
A hypothetical example
Suppose your measured PC averages 20 W at the wall and your electricity rate is 0.20 currency units per kWh. These are assumptions, not typical or measured values. The calculation is (20 ÷ 1,000) × 720 × 0.20, or 2.88 currency units for electricity that month. Substitute your own measured watts and rate; the result will vary with both.
Measure the whole PC, not the Celeron’s rated power
A processor specification is not a measurement of the complete computer’s power use. The motherboard, memory, storage, cooling, power supply, attached devices, and workload all affect wall draw. Intel notes that processor power varies with workload and system design.

A practical way to get a useful input for the formula is to use a plug-in electricity usage monitor. Run the actual PC, source video, FFmpeg command, and stream settings you plan to use, and measure over a representative period rather than relying on a brief idle reading. Use the average wall draw from that run as P in the calculation.
Intel’s 2014 guideline gives a Celeron 2000E system example of about 2.4 W idle with C-states enabled, 7.4 W idle with C-states disabled, and 13.2 W for 1080p video decoding. Those figures describe a specific configuration and are not whole-PC wall-power estimates for an unspecified mini PC or FFmpeg streaming results. They should not be used as a substitute for measuring your own machine. Intel Celeron 2000E guideline (2014).
Account for costs beyond electricity
The electricity calculation is only one part of the budget. Keep other costs separate so you do not mistake an estimate for a complete bill:

- Internet: Check your plan’s upload capacity, data allowance, and overage terms. A 24/7 stream may use substantial upstream data, but no universal allowance or charge applies across ISPs.
- Equipment: If you buy a PC or replace components for the stream, decide how you want to account for that purchase over time. It is separate from recurring electricity.
- Paid services or software: Add any actual recurring fee you choose to pay; the electricity formula does not include one.
- Power protection: If you choose backup or surge-protection equipment, treat its purchase cost separately.
Choose stream settings your PC and upload can sustain
Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate affect the encoding workload and the upload connection you need. YouTube publishes recommended ingest bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate, and advises creators to test their upload bitrate. For H.264, its examples include 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 3 Mbps for 480p30; these are recommendations, not measurements of your internet connection or a guarantee that a particular Celeron can encode at those settings.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. It lists different bitrate ranges for H.264, H.265, and AV1. Choose settings that your encoder can produce and your tested upload can sustain, then monitor stream health. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewer formats. YouTube live encoder settings.
Lowering resolution, frame rate, or bitrate may reduce encoding and upload demands, but this research does not establish how any particular Celeron will perform. Test the exact source file and filter chain you plan to use; a CPU label is not a performance guarantee.

Check whether Intel Quick Sync is usable
FFmpeg documents an Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) acceleration path, but compatibility depends on the exact processor generation and graphics hardware, operating system, drivers, FFmpeg build, source and output codecs, and filter chain. For the documented path, both the decoder and encoder must support the required acceleration, and the described mode does not use filters. Do not assume a Celeron supports hardware encoding simply because it is an Intel chip.
Confirm that your system and FFmpeg build expose the required QSV support, then test the intended command before relying on it for an always-on stream. If you use filters or the required hardware support is absent, the encoding path may differ and may place more work on the CPU. FFmpeg documentation.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public command example.
- Configure FFmpeg with the server URL and stream key as the ingest destination. Use the codec, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval appropriate to your chosen settings and YouTube’s current guidance.
- Test the full path before leaving it unattended. Check that FFmpeg is encoding, the upload remains steady, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- Plan for interruptions. If the process exits or the connection drops, you may need a restart or watchdog mechanism. That is an implementation choice, not a guarantee provided by YouTube; the cited encoder instructions do not establish a 24/7 reconnect design.
YouTube’s encoder instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Why the monthly estimate may not predict reliability
Electricity cost and stream stability are different questions. A machine can be inexpensive to run yet still fail because of thermal problems, unstable upload, a process crash, a driver issue, or a YouTube ingest interruption. Test the actual PC under the intended workload and watch both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health status. The available guidance does not establish a universal 24/7 reliability guarantee for a Celeron PC.
