A self-managed cloud VPS can start at about $4–$5 per month, but that is the price of an entry-level server—not a guarantee it can reliably run your particular 24/7 stream. A managed service costs more because it handles continuous playback and related operations. Your real cost depends on whether you encode on the server, how much storage and data transfer you need, and how much reliability work you want to manage.
What does a cloud server cost for a 24/7 YouTube music stream?
For a server that sends a stream to YouTube, current entry-level examples are DigitalOcean at $4 per month and AWS Lightsail at $5 per month. These are published starter-plan prices, not tested minimums for a continuous encoder workload. A creator who would rather use a specialist managed service can compare YTStream, which advertises $19 per month per 1080p stream and $39 per month per 4K stream. Those are vendor-listed prices and features, not independently verified performance.
| Option | Published starting point | What the price covers | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Droplet | $4/month | 512 MiB memory, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD, 500 GiB transfer | Entry-tier specs do not establish that it can sustain your chosen encoder workload. DigitalOcean pricing |
| AWS Lightsail Linux/Unix bundle | $5/month | 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, 1 TB transfer on the listed public-IPv4 plan | Some listed Asia-Pacific and South American regions include half the stated transfer allowance. Lightsail pricing and allowance notes |
| YTStream managed service | $19/month at 1080p; $39/month at 4K | Vendor advertises looping playlists and auto-restart among its features | Published vendor pricing; check current terms and suitability. YTStream |
The two VPS prices are a useful lower-bound comparison, not a universal all-in monthly bill. The title alone does not specify region, resolution, frame rate, codec, whether the server must transcode, library size, or redundancy; each can change what you need to pay for.
What kind of cloud service are you pricing?
A VPS that sends a feed to YouTube
In this setup, your server plays or encodes your media and sends the resulting live feed to YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes incoming livestreams into multiple formats for viewers, so you are pricing the host that supplies YouTube—not a complete viewer-facing distribution network.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Managed YouTube streaming
A specialist service charges for a different scope than bare server capacity. Its plan may handle uploaded video, continuous playback, playlists, and restart behavior, depending on its published offer. Compare price alongside resolution, storage, playlist support, and recovery features rather than treating a managed plan as a like-for-like VPS.
Cloud encoding and viewer distribution
Cloud media infrastructure that encodes, packages, and delivers video directly to viewers is another category entirely. AWS gives an illustrative one-hour live-event estimate of $69.74 for a 540p event with about 1,000 viewers, including $67.24 for CloudFront delivery. That example assumes US East (N. Virginia), standard pricing, highest-bitrate consumption, and a 99% cache-hit ratio; AWS says actual costs may be higher or lower. It is not a monthly estimate for a VPS that sends an encoder feed to YouTube. AWS live-streaming cost assumptions

What changes the VPS size and monthly bill?
Resolution, frame rate, and encoding
For H.264 ingestion, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60, along with constant bitrate encoding and RTMP or RTMPS. Those are recommended incoming-stream settings, not server prices or proof that a particular VPS can encode at that quality. If your server only plays a file and passes it through, its workload differs from one that must transcode media. YouTube encoder settings
CPU and memory headroom
Provider specs do not prove that a small instance will run a specific encoder smoothly around the clock. Test your actual media, codec, resolution, and frame rate on the selected plan; monitor CPU, memory, dropped frames, and reconnects before depending on it. DigitalOcean describes CPU-optimized Droplets as suitable for workloads such as media streaming, but that is not certification of its $4 entry plan for your workload.

Data transfer and region
Estimate outbound data from the stream bitrate and the service’s accounting rules, then compare it with the included allowance. Lightsail counts both inbound and outbound traffic toward the allowance; only outbound transfer above it is subject to overage charges. Its listed plans may include half the stated transfer in some Asia-Pacific and South American regions, so check the chosen region’s terms rather than assuming the headline allowance applies everywhere. Media storage and reliability
Your library needs enough disk or object storage for the recordings you plan to loop. The entry VPS examples do not include a separately sized media library or optional backup architecture. Snapshots, monitoring, redundancy, and recovery planning can add to the cost—and administration—even if the server’s base price stays low.

How to estimate your own monthly cost
- Choose the architecture. Decide whether you want to administer a VPS that feeds YouTube, use a managed 24/7 service, or build cloud encoding and viewer distribution. Do not use a CDN event estimate as a proxy for an encoder VPS.
- Set the actual stream format. Identify resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether you will transcode. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as the ingestion target, then test the server against your real workload.
- Size compute and storage. Select a plan with enough CPU and memory for the chosen playback or encoding task and enough storage for the media library. The lowest published plan is only a starting price; the workload test determines whether it is adequate.
- Check transfer in your region. Compare expected stream traffic with the provider’s included allowance and read its overage rules. Confirm regional reductions before committing.
- Add reliability costs and operating effort. Decide whether you need backups, monitoring, redundancy, and a recovery procedure. Include both their fees and the time required to administer them.
- Compare against a managed plan. Weigh the VPS’s lower base price and greater control against the managed service’s published scope, resolution limits, playlist features, recovery behavior, storage, and support.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is another managed encoding and distribution option, but it is not a budget VPS equivalent: Google bills for active channel time with a ten-minute minimum and minute rounding, prices vary by resolution and codec, and each remote distribution stream is an extra output. If maintaining a VPS is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a managed option for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Copyright still applies to a 24/7 music stream
Using a VPS or managed service does not grant rights to the music. YouTube’s livestream terms say you must have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Check that your tracks and any visuals are cleared for livestreaming before scheduling a continuous broadcast. YouTube livestream terms
