In CNX Software’s 2024 tests, a MINIX NEO Z100-0dB drew 14.7–17.9 watts during YouTube playback. At that range, running it continuously uses about 10.6–12.9 kWh in a 30-day month. Multiply that by the usage rate on your own bill to estimate the cost.
What a measured fanless mini PC used during YouTube playback
CNX Software measured a fanless MINIX NEO Z100-0dB at 14.7–17.9 W while playing YouTube at 8K60 in Chrome on Windows 11. Its setup included Wi-Fi 6, a keyboard-and-mouse RF dongle, and a VGA display connected through an HDMI-to-VGA adapter. The same review reported 8.9–9.2 W at idle. CNX Software’s Windows 11 review describes the meter readings and setup.
In a separate Ubuntu 22.04 test, the same model used 14.7–17.9 W during YouTube 8Kp60 playback in Firefox, and 7.5–7.6 W at idle. That setup also included Wi-Fi 6 and USB RF dongles, plus a VGA monitor connected through an adapter. The matching playback ranges are useful examples, not proof that operating system, browser, or attached equipment never affect consumption: the tests were not controlled comparisons of those variables. These are readings for one PC in specific review configurations, not a typical figure for every fanless mini PC. Actual draw can change with video resolution and frame rate, browser, operating system, hardware decoding, peripherals, power supply, and display setup. Processor TDP and the power adapter’s maximum output rating are not substitutes for measuring the complete system at the wall; GMKtec’s measurement guide explains the distinction.

Estimated energy use and bill cost
Use these equations for a device or setup with a steady average draw:
- Energy (kWh) = average power (W) × hours used ÷ 1,000.
- Usage cost = energy (kWh) × your applicable electricity price per kWh.
The table applies the MINIX review’s 14.7–17.9 W playback range to different schedules. The dollar examples use an illustrative $0.12/kWh rate cited by Mini PC Lab’s 2026 guide; it is not a universal or current tariff. Replace it with the usage rate on your bill. Fixed account charges are not part of this marginal device-cost estimate.

The figures are calculations from the cited playback range, not additional measurements. If your electricity plan has time-of-use rates, calculate each period using its applicable rate rather than applying one price to all hours.
Measure your own streaming setup
A plug-in energy meter can replace an estimate with a reading from the setup you actually use. Put it between the wall outlet and the mini PC’s power adapter, then record accumulated kWh over a representative session. This boundary includes the adapter’s conversion losses and equipment powered by the PC. A monitor connected to its own power outlet is excluded; measure it separately or include it in a clearly identified combined reading. - Connect the meter at the wall outlet feeding the mini PC’s adapter.
- Run a representative YouTube session and note the playback quality, browser, operating system, USB devices, monitor arrangement, and session duration.
- Record the meter’s accumulated kWh, and note whether a separately powered display was included.
- For a recurring daily schedule, calculate streaming and non-streaming states separately if the PC stays on outside playback hours. Multiply each state’s energy by the rate that applies during those hours.
For comparisons between PCs, keep conditions aligned: compare playback with playback, and record the operating system, browser, resolution, frame rate, hardware decoding, network connection, peripherals, meter position, and whether display power is included. A CPU model or advertised TDP alone cannot establish which setup will cost less to run.
Why idle and off-state numbers are not streaming estimates
ASUS’s declaration for the CF40/Fanless Chromebox CF40 reports 2.96 W idle, 0.32 W sleep, and 0.13 W off for its representative model under the stated compliance procedure. Those are state figures, not YouTube playback measurements, so they should not be compared directly with the MINIX playback test. The report is dated 2025-11-05: ASUS support.

Likewise, a low idle reading does not tell you how much the device uses while decoding a video. For the bill impact of continuous YouTube playback, use a playback measurement or meter your own system under that workload.
