There is no single internet-data price for a 24/7 YouTube stream: your encoder bitrate determines roughly how much data it uploads, while your ISP plan determines whether that usage costs extra. At a steady 1 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 324 GB (decimal), before network overhead and other household use. Multiply your total stream bitrate by 324 to estimate a 30-day month, then check your plan’s included data and overage rules.
How much data does a 24/7 stream upload?
For a 30-day month, a continuously running stream sends approximately 324 GB per Mbps of total encoder bitrate. This is a calculation using decimal gigabytes: 1 Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000. It is an estimate of stream media data, not a measured bill. Protocol overhead, bitrate variation, reconnects, and other household activity can change actual usage.
Use the encoder’s total bitrate, including audio if it is reported separately. If the billing month is not 30 days, the estimate is about 334.8 GB per Mbps for 31 days or 302.4 GB per Mbps for 28 days. ISPs may display usage in units that differ from decimal GB, so compare like units where possible.
Example monthly upload estimates
The examples below apply YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates to the 30-day calculation. They are arithmetic estimates, not guaranteed usage or a claim that every stream will maintain its configured bitrate.

YouTube’s recommended rates vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec; its live encoder guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Configured bitrate and real network transfer can differ. YouTube’s automatic transcoding creates viewer-side output formats; it does not remove the broadcaster’s upload requirement. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
What will your ISP charge?
The stream’s data volume alone cannot determine a dollar cost. You may pay only your normal broadband subscription if your plan has unlimited data or if all counted usage stays within its allowance. On a capped or metered plan, the stream may use part or all of that allowance, alongside other household uploads and downloads. Overage, throttling, and usage-measurement rules vary by provider, plan, region, and account.

For example, Xfinity’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, says new internet plans include unlimited data and that a 1.2 TB threshold applies only to certain older plans, with plan-type and regional exclusions. For eligible accounts under that policy, it describes a courtesy month for the first overage in a 12-month period, followed by $10 per additional 50 GB up to $100 per month. This is a specific provider policy, not a typical or universal fee. Xfinity also reports an average monthly usage of about 498 GB for its customers; that provider-stated average is not an independent benchmark and does not estimate a 24/7 stream’s data needs. Use the broadband facts label for the exact offer and check your account’s usage meter and terms. Xfinity says its labels show plan price, recurring and optional fees, upload and download speeds, latency, and included data; availability and terms depend on the offer and address. Estimate your own monthly usage
- Find the total configured bitrate. Check the encoder or streaming software, adding audio bitrate if it is listed separately.
- Estimate stream data. For a 30-day month, multiply Mbps by 324 to get approximate decimal GB. Adjust for month length if needed.
- Allow for real-world differences. Treat the result as a baseline; overhead, bitrate changes, reconnects, and other counted household use can increase total usage.
- Compare against your actual allowance. Check the ISP account meter, plan’s included data, and any overage or throttling terms for your region and account.
- Compare practical alternatives. Consider whether a different broadband plan, an unlimited-data option, or remote stream hosting makes sense for your costs and reliability needs.
Ways to keep the stream running—and where the upload happens
With a do-it-yourself setup at home, the streaming computer or encoder sends the video continuously through your broadband connection. The upload volume is determined by the stream bitrate and duration; moving to remote hosting changes where that continuous upload originates, but does not make the video data disappear. Check the hosting service’s current charges and limits, and remember your home internet subscription may still be needed for ordinary use.
