How much does it cost to run a PC 24/7 in Mumbai? It depends on the computer’s measured average power draw, your electricity distributor, your household’s monthly consumption and applicable bill adjustments. As a worked example, a PC drawing 100 watts at the wall uses 72 kWh in a 30-day month. Under Tata Power Distribution Mumbai’s FY 2026–27 residential energy and wheeling rates, those units would add about ₹310–₹910 in base variable charges, depending on the tariff slab they fall into. That is not a complete bill estimate: fuel adjustment charges and other applicable charges can change the amount.
Estimate the PC’s monthly electricity use
Use the PC’s average draw at the wall, not the maximum wattage printed on its power supply. For a steady draw over a 30-day month:
Monthly energy (kWh) = watts × 720 hours ÷ 1,000
For example, a 100 W average draw uses 100 × 720 ÷ 1,000 = 72 kWh. That 100 W figure is an illustrative scenario, not a measurement or a claim about typical streaming PCs. Actual draw varies with the hardware and workload, including idle time, streaming, encoding and gaming.

These are calculation examples only. If the PC’s draw varies, measuring energy over representative use is more useful than treating one short peak as its average.

Worked cost for 100 W in Tata Power Distribution Mumbai’s FY 2026–27 schedule
The following estimate uses the residential LT I (B) tariff schedule for 1 April 2026 through 31 March 2027. It adds the listed energy and wheeling charges for each slab, then applies that combined rate to 72 kWh. The rates are base variable-charge components, not the complete payable bill.

The figures show what 72 kWh would cost if all those units were charged at the stated slab rate. Your PC’s actual incremental cost depends on where the added consumption falls in your household’s billing calculation. If the home already uses more than 100 units, some or all of the PC’s additional consumption may be charged at a higher slab rate; if it crosses a threshold, calculate each portion at the applicable rate.

Why your bill may differ from the estimate
Utility and tariff category
“Mumbai residential rate” is not one universal tariff. The figures above are for Tata Power Company Limited Distribution Business’s Mumbai residential LT I (B) schedule. MSEDCL lists a separate FY 2026–27 tariff order dated 25 March 2026; the order’s listing alone does not provide the detailed calculation used here. Fuel adjustment and other bill components
The Tata Power tariff order states that fuel adjustment charges (FAC) are added over the base tariff: “Fuel Adjustment Charge (FAC) computed in accordance with provisions of MYT Regulations, 2024 applicable to all categories of consumers, and will be charged over and above the base tariff.” Fixed charges and other applicable components also affect the bill. The order lists a monthly fixed charge of ₹90 for a single-phase residential connection and ₹160 for a three-phase connection; these are connection-level charges and generally should not be attributed entirely to the PC.

Time-of-day rebate
The FY 2026–27 Tata Power order lists a ₹0.55/kWh residential rebate from 09:00 to 17:00, subject to installation of a smart meter. An always-on PC operates during both rebate and non-rebate hours. Confirm that the meter and account meet the conditions rather than assuming the rebate applies to every unit.

How to calculate your own PC’s cost
- Check your bill. Note the electricity distributor, residential tariff category, meter phase and billing period.
- Measure wall consumption. Measure the desktop alone, or include a monitor if you want the combined setup cost. Record representative idle, streaming, encoding and reboot periods. A plug-in electricity usage monitor that records kWh is one optional way to measure at the wall; choose one suitable for your outlet and load. Its reading measures consumption, not your utility’s price.
- Use recorded energy where possible. If the meter reports kWh over a period, use that reading and scale it to a month if needed. Do not estimate from the PC’s power-supply label alone.
- Add the PC’s energy to household use. Apply the tariff to the resulting total, allocating the added units across the relevant slabs. To isolate the PC’s cost, calculate the bill with and without its consumption using the same tariff and adjustments.
- Compare against the bill and tariff schedule. Account for variable charges and applicable adjustments. MSEDCL says its online tools can estimate consumption and calculate an approximate bill; the actual account bill and applicable tariff govern the amount.
