There is no single monthly cost: it depends on your server’s measured power use, local electricity price, internet upload plan and whether you already own suitable hardware. For two continuous H.264 streams at YouTube’s recommended settings, budget for about 10 Mbps of video upload and 3.24 decimal TB of payload per 30-day month at 1080p30, or 6 Mbps and 1.944 decimal TB at 720p30. Add the server’s electricity and any ISP charges; treat a new server as a separate one-time purchase.
Estimate the recurring cost with your own figures
Use the actual average wall power of the server while it is running both streams, your electricity tariff, and the terms of your internet plan. A 30-day month has 720 hours, so each continuous watt uses 0.72 kWh.
- Measure power: If possible, use a wall-power meter while the server is doing the intended two-stream workload. Idle power alone may understate consumption.
- Calculate electricity: Average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 × your price per kWh. Equivalently, multiply watts by 0.72 to estimate monthly kWh, then multiply by your tariff.
- Check internet costs: Compare the estimated upload traffic and steady upload requirement with your ISP’s data cap, overage rules and upload performance. Do not assume upload counts toward a cap or that your plan charges by data; check the contract.
- Separate hardware: If an existing server can encode and send both feeds reliably, its purchase cost is already sunk. If you need a new machine, list that as a one-time cost or amortize it separately; do not fold an assumed hardware price into a universal monthly estimate.
For scale, a continuous 10 W draw is 7.2 kWh per 30-day month; 50 W is 36 kWh and 100 W is 72 kWh. Multiply each amount by your actual tariff. As an illustration only, an additional 10 W at an assumed $0.20/kWh would cost $1.44 per month. Neither that tariff nor 10 W is a typical-price or performance claim.
Upload bandwidth and monthly data for two streams
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are video encoder bitrates, not guaranteed internet speed requirements. Two feeds at those settings produce the following continuous payload arithmetic for a 30-day month, excluding protocol overhead:

| Two-stream setting | Combined video bitrate | Payload per 30-day month | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30, 5 Mbps each | 10 Mbps | About 3.24 decimal TB | Use when both feeds need 1080p detail and your upload connection can sustain the load with headroom. |
| 720p30, 3 Mbps each | 6 Mbps | About 1.944 decimal TB | Use when 720p is visually adequate and you want lower upload and data demand. |
The calculation is total Mbps × 324 decimal GB per Mbps-month. The TB figures are decimal; an ISP may define or display data units differently. Actual traffic can be higher because of audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and bitrate behavior. A variable bitrate or an audio track also means observed traffic may not match the simple video-only arithmetic exactly.
Choose quality before choosing an internet plan
Compare the two prerecorded videos at the intended playback size. 1080p can preserve more detail, while 720p reduces the recommended combined video rate from 10 Mbps to 6 Mbps. YouTube also advises testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Leave additional upload headroom for bitrate variation, audio, network overhead and other household activity rather than treating the combined video bitrate as the connection’s full capacity.

YouTube automatically transcodes a live feed into multiple output formats for viewers, so the home encoder sends its selected feed rather than separately encoding every viewer rendition. For settings and protocol guidance, see YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations and the OBS explanation of transcoding.
Confirm the server can run both encoders
Two encoders can increase CPU or GPU load and wall power. The change depends on the hardware, codec, resolution, frame rate and whether encoding is software- or hardware-assisted. There is no universal minimum specification or dependable power figure for this workload: measure the machine under the actual two-stream load and check that it stays stable without dropped frames or thermal problems.

YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started, but that does not establish that every existing machine can handle two continuous encodes. Its live-streaming tips cover equipment and operating guidance. If buying hardware is necessary, compare a low-power mini PC or home server on purchase price and measured wall draw; a model-specific performance recommendation cannot be made from the available figures.
Set up the two YouTube Live feeds
- Check channel eligibility: The channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s stated limits are up to 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key, so two simultaneous streams are within those numeric limits if the other conditions are met. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Create each live stream in YouTube Studio: Set up the two destinations and use the matching stream key for each encoder output. Keep keys private; anyone with a key may be able to send content to that stream. Follow the current Studio prompts, since interface labels can change.
- Configure the encoders: For the settings discussed here, select H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its recommended video rates are 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 3 Mbps at 720p30. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP. The RTMPS ingestion guide explains the secure ingest connection.
- Test before leaving the server unattended: Start each feed, check the preview and stream health, and verify both streams remain stable while the household connection is in use. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and monitoring stream health; a speed-test result alone does not prove long-term stability.
- Plan for recovery and recordings: Decide how the encoder will reconnect after an internet interruption and how you will preserve a local copy if YouTube’s archive is important. A 24/7 stream is not equivalent to a reliable replay archive.
Account for archives, copyright and content rules
Very long streams may not be archived
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. For replay reliability, keep a local recording or plan controlled restarts before the 12-hour threshold, and provide enough local storage for the recordings you intend to retain. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Confirm rights for both picture and sound
A video file is not automatically cleared for continuous live rebroadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to represent that they have the necessary rights for the live content, including music rights where applicable. Third-party content can interrupt or terminate a live stream; even content a creator believes is licensed may trigger action if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Confirm the rights to both video and audio before streaming, and follow YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and Community Guidelines.

| Input | How to determine it | What to enter |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and bitrate | Choose the actual settings for each feed; the YouTube H.264 recommendations above are reference points. | Each stream’s video Mbps |
| Total upload bitrate | Add the video bitrate of both feeds, then allow headroom for audio, overhead and other use. | Combined Mbps and tested steady upload capacity |
| Monthly data | Multiply combined Mbps by 324 decimal GB for a 30-day month; actual traffic may be higher. | Compare with ISP cap and billing units |
| Electricity | Measure average wall watts during the workload; multiply watts by 0.72 for monthly kWh, then by the local tariff. | Your measured watts and currency per kWh |
| Hardware | Use zero incremental purchase cost if existing equipment is sufficient; otherwise record a separate purchase or amortized amount. | Existing server or planned hardware cost |
| Local archive | Estimate storage and any extra power or load for local recording if replays matter. | Required retention and available disk space |
Without a location-specific electricity tariff, ISP plan, measured server draw and hardware ownership status, a single monthly currency figure would be misleading.
