The viral claim that Valve makes almost $50 million per employee is an estimate, not a figure Valve has reported or independently audited. It depends on third-party estimates of Steam-related revenue and an assumed workforce, and it can mislead if Steam marketplace spending is treated as Valve’s own revenue. The available sources do not establish Valve’s current audited revenue or a current dated headcount.
Where does the “almost $50 million per employee” figure come from?
The figure is an estimate discussed in 2025 coverage, not a published Valve financial ratio. Tom’s Hardware discussed an estimated $16.2 billion in Steam revenue and an estimated $17 billion for Valve, alongside an assumed workforce of roughly 350. Those figures are not Valve filings. The $16.2 billion estimate’s revenue basis must not be confused with the amount Valve retains from Steam marketplace transactions; the coverage does not establish an audited, company-wide revenue numerator.
The arithmetic is simple: divide a company’s revenue by its employee count. The hard part is choosing numbers that measure the same thing. If a numerator uses estimated marketplace spending, it may include money paid to publishers and developers rather than revenue retained by Valve. A result built from that numerator and an assumed headcount is not a verified measure of Valve revenue per employee.
How many people work at Valve?
Valve’s official company page describes it as having over 300 artists, programmers, and writers, but does not give a dated workforce snapshot. Historical reporting based on court documents put Valve at 336 employees in 2021. That is a historical count, not confirmation of today’s headcount. The roughly 350-person denominator used in the viral calculation is an assumption, not an official current figure.

What does Valve earn from Steam?
Steam marketplace sales, Valve’s commissions, Valve-wide revenue, and operating profit are different measures. Steam is a distribution platform used by thousands of creators and publishers, so the total value of purchases made through it is not automatically revenue belonging to Valve.
PC Gamer reported that purported court-document figures put Steam commission revenue at about $2 billion in 2021 and its operating margin just under 60%. Multiplying those reported figures suggests roughly $1.2 billion in operating profit. That is a derived estimate, not a directly verified company statement: PC Gamer noted that the underlying filing had been removed and could not be independently checked against the original document.

Does Valve really outperform tech giants per employee?
Valve’s Handbook for New Employees says: “Our profitability per employee is higher than that of Google or Amazon or Microsoft, and we believe strongly that the right thing to do in that case is to put a maximum amount of money back into each employee’s pocket.” This is Valve’s own comparative claim, not an independently audited comparison supplied with aligned figures for those companies.
A fair comparison would use the same year, revenue or profit definition, workforce scope, and company boundary for every company. It would also distinguish employees from contractors and company-wide results from Steam-only figures. The available sources do not provide a verified, aligned set of current numbers to prove that Valve “crushes” Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple, or Meta on a like-for-like basis.

Why can Valve operate with a relatively small workforce?
Valve’s business combines Steam, games, and consumer hardware. Steam distributes games for thousands of creators and publishers, while Valve also sells its own products and operates a hardware portfolio that includes Steam Deck, Valve Index, Steam Controller, and Steam Link. A platform serving many publishers can generate substantial activity without Valve employing everyone who makes or sells games on it.
That helps explain why Steam’s scale and Valve’s employee count are not the same thing as a conventional game publisher’s production footprint. But the official sources do not provide an exact revenue mix, so they cannot show how much of Valve’s economics comes from commissions, its own games, or hardware.
