How Much Does Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Resemble Gears of War?

Relic acknowledged using Gears of War as a shooting benchmark, but Space Marine's no-cover, melee-and-shooting combat makes the comparison more nuanced than its familiar armored-soldier look suggests.

“Rip off” is a provocative way to frame the comparison, not a proven fact or legal conclusion. The games share conspicuous third-person-shooter imagery, and Relic producer Andy Lang said the studio used Gears of War as a benchmark for shooting. But Space Marine has no cover system and builds its combat around melee as well as guns—making its central play pattern different from the cover-focused comparison described at the time.

What makes the games look alike?

The resemblance is easy to spot in a screenshot: heavily armored, bulky soldiers; oversized guns; a third-person camera; and graphic combat. A 2011 GamesBeat comparison also pointed to a large aiming reticle, blood effects and chainsaw-like weapon imagery. GameSpot’s hands-on preview recorded that Relic accepted the “Gears of Warhammer” comparison, which it treated as a compliment.

These are real points of resemblance, but they do not all carry the same weight. Armored sci-fi soldiers and large weapons are broad visual motifs; their presence alone does not show that one game copied the other. Space Marine is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe and follows Captain Titus, while Gears of War belongs to a separate science-fiction franchise.

Guns and the third-person view

Both games put a large armed character in a third-person shooter. Lang acknowledged the comparison directly: “I’m a huge Gears fan. Love Gears 1 and 2. If we’re going to do a third-person game, we have to look at the best as our baseline.” He said Relic regarded Gears‘ shooting as a standard to meet—not that the entire game was a template to reproduce.

Chainsaw imagery, different combat roles

The chainsaw comparison is visually memorable, but the weapons serve different roles in the described combat. Space Marine gives players a dedicated melee system with weapons such as the chainsword, axe and hammer. The comparison cited by GamesBeat concerns Gears‘ chainsaw-bayonet imagery. Similar-looking close-combat tools do not establish an identical melee system.

How does Space Marine play differently?

The most important distinction is what the player does to survive. Space Marine has no cover system. Rather than making cover the organizing principle of combat, it combines ranged shooting with close-range attacks and pushes the player toward engagement.

A forward-pressure combat loop

GameSpot’s review described a “kill, don’t hide” mentality: finishing kills restores health, encouraging players to stay involved in fights instead of relying on cover. That health-recovery mechanic is part of Space Marine‘s combat rhythm; the cited interviews do not establish a matching mechanic in Gears.

Melee and shooting are meant to work together

Lang described Relic’s intended distinction as building around “the combination of melee and shooting” and pushing players into “different kinds of encounters.” That is a developer’s account of the design aim, not independent proof that every element was original. It does, however, explain why a surface comparison of guns and armor misses the game’s defining combat emphasis.

What did Relic say about the comparison?

Lang agreed that the comparison was valid, while rejecting cloning as the goal: “Relic’s not about cloning other people’s games, it’s really about taking the best of and building upon it.” His comments support a specific conclusion: Relic looked to Gears as a reference for third-person shooting, then sought to distinguish Space Marine through the integration of melee and ranged combat.

Game director Raphael van Lierop framed the project around its own franchise fantasy: “our starting point in creating this game was to deliver the core fantasy of being the Warhammer 40,000 universe’s most iconic hero – the Space Marine.” He also said, “Many people call out superficial similarities that are then dispelled once they play Space Marine.” Those statements describe the team’s intent and response; they do not settle how much any individual design choice resembles another game.

So how many ways does it “rip off” Gears of War?

There is no measured count or similarity score. The original question is rhetorical: the comparison rests on a cluster of visible traits—armored physiques, large guns, third-person shooting, blood and chainsaw imagery—not a verified tally of copied features.

The fairest answer is that Space Marine resembles Gears of War at a glance and openly took its shooting as a benchmark, but its no-cover, melee-and-shooting combat loop gives it a meaningful mechanical distinction. The cited accounts support discussion of influence and resemblance; they do not establish copying of protected expression or intellectual-property infringement.
