At a steady 24 hours a day, every 1 watt of average wall draw uses 0.72 kWh in 30 days, or 8.76 kWh in 365 days. Measure the setup at the wall in its actual streaming state, then multiply the resulting kWh by the marginal energy rate on your current electricity tariff.
Estimate the electricity use
Use average wall power—not the power supply’s rated wattage, a CPU rating, or an advertised maximum. The calculation is:
Average watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh
For continuous streaming, that becomes average watts × 24 × number of days ÷ 1,000. The following figures are arithmetic examples, not measurements of particular PCs or representative ambient-stream results.

For example, if the complete setup averages 60 W at the wall, it uses 43.2 kWh over 30 days of uninterrupted operation. Your PC may draw more or less depending on its hardware, encoding method, stream workload, display, peripherals and power settings.

Measure the setup you actually stream with
- Decide what to include. Measure the PC alone, or include the monitor, speakers, router and any other equipment needed for the stream. Keep the scope consistent when comparing setups.
- Measure at the wall. Use a plug-in electricity usage meter while the computer is running in its intended ambient-stream state. A short idle reading may not capture changes in workload.
- Average over a representative period. If the meter reports fluctuating watts, use its average over the measurement period. If it reports kWh, divide that energy by elapsed hours and multiply by 1,000 to calculate average watts. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends measuring fluctuating consumption over a period and dividing by the measurement period to determine average power (DOE measurement guidance).
- Convert to monthly energy. Multiply average watts by 24 and 30, then divide by 1,000 to get a 30-day estimate in kWh. Use the actual number of days if you want a different period.
- Estimate the bill impact. Multiply the kWh by the marginal energy rate that applies to your household. Check the current bill or utility tariff for applicable variable duties, surcharges, subsidies and time-of-day treatment.
Work out the cost on your Indian electricity tariff
India does not have one national household electricity rate. Rates and billing rules vary by state, utility, consumer category and slab. The Central Electricity Authority’s tariff-and-duty publication is organized by state and utility; its 2025 compilation includes FY 2024–25 information, so consult your current bill or distribution utility’s latest order for a current estimate (CEA tariff and duty reports).
For a basic estimate, multiply your additional monthly kWh by the marginal energy rate that applies to those units. Add relevant variable charges if you want a fuller estimate. Do not automatically add fixed charges as though they scale with each extra kWh; check how your tariff treats them.

Account for time-of-day rates only if they apply to you
In a 23 June 2023 announcement, the Ministry of Power said: “Under the ToD Tariff system, Tariff during solar hours (duration of eight hours in a day as specified by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission) shall be 10%-20% less than the normal tariff, while the tariff during peak hours will be 10 to 20 percent higher.” The announcement said the system would apply to non-agricultural consumers by 1 April 2025 at the latest. That does not establish the rate or implementation for a particular household. Check your bill or current utility order before using time-of-day rates in your calculation (Ministry of Power announcement).
Why annual computer-efficiency figures are not a 24/7 stream estimate
Published annual-use figures can help compare efficient products under their stated basis, but they do not tell you what a particular computer will consume while continuously streaming. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 data-basis examples use ENERGY STAR Qualified Products List values as of December 2024 and market data. Its desktop examples—12 kWh/year for the best available, 52 kWh/year for ENERGY STAR and 208 kWh/year for less efficient models—are for the integrated or switchable-graphics category. Its notebook examples are 3, 15 and 41 kWh/year, respectively. These are U.S. purchasing comparisons, not measurements of a PC held active around the clock for an ambient stream (DOE computer purchasing guidance).

The same guidance gives a 52 kWh/year example for a qualifying 27-inch 1080p monitor versus 72 kWh/year for its less-efficient comparison. Those figures are also annual purchasing examples, and their associated cost example uses a U.S. federal-facility electricity price—not an Indian residential tariff (DOE display purchasing guidance). For your stream’s energy use, a wall measurement under your actual conditions is more relevant.
