Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For modern PC gaming, start with 16 GB of system RAM; choose 32 GB if you want more headroom for gaming while running a browser, Discord, streaming tools, or other apps. For storage, size your drive around the games and files you keep installed: Microsoft suggests 512 GB to 2 TB or more for a PC holding games alongside other content. There is no universal VRAM amount that guarantees good performance: match graphics memory to your games, resolution, settings, and GPU.
These are three different resources. System RAM holds data the PC is actively using, storage keeps games and files installed, and VRAM is memory on the graphics card used for rendering games and applications. More of one does not make up for too little of another.
How much system RAM is enough for gaming?
16 GB is a practical starting point; 32 GB is the more comfortable target for multitasking. Microsoft Windows’ April 9, 2026 gaming guide puts it this way: “16GB RAM is the baseline; 32GB is the “no worries” upgrade”. That is Microsoft’s editorial guidance, not a benchmark or a promise that every game will run well. Read Microsoft’s gaming guidance.
Choose 16 GB if you mainly play games
For a system used mostly to play games, 16 GB is a reasonable starting configuration. Check the current requirements for the specific titles you play, particularly if you use demanding mods or keep other applications open. A capacity recommendation cannot guarantee a particular frame rate or smoothness: the game, processor, graphics card, settings, and other running software matter too.

Choose 32 GB for more headroom
Consider 32 GB if you regularly play with a browser, voice chat, streaming or recording software, or other memory-using applications running. This provides more room for the game and those applications to share system memory; it does not make every game faster by itself.
Valve’s optional, anonymous Steam Hardware & Software Survey for September 2026 reports that 42.22% of surveyed Steam customers had 32 GB of system RAM and 37.82% had 16 GB. Those figures describe survey participants’ hardware, not the minimum or recommended memory for a game. See the Steam Hardware & Software Survey.

How much storage should you get?
Pick capacity by adding up the games you want installed at once, then leave room for updates and your other files. Microsoft’s current PC buying guide suggests 512 GB to 2 TB or more where game files share a drive with photos, videos, and other content. This is a broad suggested range, not a per-game requirement. Keeping other files in cloud storage can reduce how much local capacity you need. See Microsoft’s PC buying guide.
- Start with your library: total the installed games you want available without reinstalling or moving them.
- Reserve working room: leave space for game updates, saves, downloads, and personal files rather than planning to fill the drive completely.
- Consider the drive type: an SSD can help with game loading. NVMe is not a universal requirement for PC games.
Microsoft says DirectStorage requires an NVMe SSD and a DirectX 12 GPU that supports Shader Model 6.0 for games that use the feature. That requirement applies to those DirectStorage games, not all games. See Microsoft’s Windows gaming documentation.

How much VRAM do you need?
There is no one VRAM capacity that guarantees good performance across modern games. VRAM is on-board memory on the graphics card; AMD describes it as memory used for rendering games and applications. The useful amount depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, and the GPU as a whole. Check the current requirements for the games you want to play and compare them with the exact graphics card you are considering. Read AMD’s VRAM overview.
Resolution and settings affect the graphics workload, so consider them alongside the target frame rate when choosing a card. Do not treat VRAM capacity as a stand-in for overall GPU speed: two cards with the same amount of VRAM can deliver different performance. AMD’s page includes results from specific dated hardware and software configurations, including a May 16, 2023 Far Cry 6 test at 1440p Ultra with high ray tracing, and notes that system configurations can affect results. Those results should not be generalized to other games or systems.

Valve’s September 2026 Steam survey reports 16 GB of VRAM in 27.21% of surveyed configurations and 8 GB in 26.71%. These shares show what surveyed Steam customers use; they do not establish which graphics card is fast enough for a particular game. See the Steam Hardware & Software Survey.
How to choose a balanced gaming PC configuration
- Set your display goal. Decide the resolution and refresh rate you want to play at; graphics-card choice should reflect both your target resolution and frame-rate goals.
- Check your games. Look up current minimum and recommended requirements for the titles you care about, including storage and graphics requirements.
- Account for how you play. Add headroom if you multitask, stream, record, or use mods. These habits can change what is comfortable for you.
- Size storage for your installed library. Allow for updates and personal files, and decide whether you are comfortable moving or uninstalling games to make room.
- Compare the GPU as a whole. Consider its performance for your games and resolution along with its VRAM capacity, rather than choosing by memory number alone.
- Check upgrade compatibility. Before buying RAM or storage for an existing PC, verify supported memory type and capacity, available slots, and drive interfaces. On a laptop, check whether the memory or storage is accessible or soldered.
Why Windows minimums are not gaming targets
Microsoft lists 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage as Windows 11 minimum requirements. Those are operating-system requirements, not recommended specifications for modern PC gaming; meeting them does not establish that a PC is suitable for a particular game. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.
