Xbox Series S is sold with either a 512 GB or 1 TB internal SSD, depending on the model. Those are the advertised drive capacities—not a guaranteed amount of free space for game installs. Microsoft does not publish a fixed usable-space figure on its product page, so check your console’s storage settings for the space available on your specific system.
How much storage does Xbox Series S have?
Microsoft lists Series S configurations with a custom NVMe SSD of either 512 GB or 1 TB. The 512 GB option is available in Robot White; 1 TB models include Carbon Black and Robot White. Model availability can vary by market. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S specifications describe the marketed drive capacities, not how much space remains for games after system use.
How much usable storage can games use?
There is no fixed usable-space number established by Microsoft’s product specifications. The amount free for installs is the figure to check on your own console: open the storage settings and look at the available space. It can differ from the advertised SSD capacity, so do not treat 512 GB or 1 TB as the amount you can fill with games.
There is also no dependable universal answer to “How many games will fit?” Installed game sizes vary, and the number of titles you can keep installed depends on their individual sizes and any other content using storage. Use the available-space reading on the console and the install sizes for the games you want rather than a generic game-count estimate.

Can you add storage to an Xbox Series S?
Yes. Microsoft lists two expansion options, but they are not interchangeable in how they are described:
| Storage option | What Microsoft states | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Matches internal storage performance; sold separately. | Confirm the card’s capacity, compatibility, price, and local availability. |
| USB 3.1 external HDD | USB HDD support is listed separately from the Expansion Card. | Check current Xbox guidance for whether the specific game can be played directly from the drive. |
Microsoft lists USB HDD support, but that listing alone does not establish that every Series X|S game can run directly from USB storage. Before buying a drive for a particular game, verify that game’s current storage and play requirements. For the Expansion Card’s compatibility details, see Xbox Support’s guide to using the Storage Expansion Card. For storage management, consult Xbox Support’s Manage storage page.

Does Xbox Series S use discs?
No. Xbox Series S is digital-only and does not play physical discs. Games must be accessed digitally, so the storage available on the console and any compatible expansion are especially relevant when deciding which games to keep installed.
