Netflix’s seven-episode East of Eden gives Cathy Ames renewed attention without making her harmless: it invites viewers to consider the forces shaping her while leaving her responsible for the harm she causes. That approach can preserve Steinbeck’s moral design because, as writer and co-showrunner Zoe Kazan argues, the novel questions Adam Trask’s ideal of goodness as well as Cathy’s belief in evil. The series’ Cathy-centered emphasis is a reinterpretation, not proof of perfect fidelity.
What the Netflix adaptation changes—and what it keeps
Netflix describes its adaptation as a seven-episode limited series based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel. Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames, with Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask; Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart are co-showrunners. The series spans generations of the Trask family, from the American Civil War to World War I, and includes Adam’s sons Cal and Aron. Netflix’s October 1, 2026 overview says all seven episodes are streaming globally.
Netflix’s framing emphasizes Cathy, the California dream, free will, and “the choice between good and evil.” That emphasis gives the story a different center of gravity, but the family saga remains larger than Cathy alone. The adaptation’s challenge is to make her inner life more legible without allowing that new attention to dissolve the consequences of her choices.
How Cathy becomes more understandable without being excused
Context is not absolution
Netflix’s official materials call Cathy an antihero and say the adaptation gives her renewed focus. A review of the released series reads her as both a victim of male abuse and a person responsible for deceit, abandonment, and violence. In that critic’s interpretation, anger at men’s control and a desire for freedom help explain her conduct; they do not excuse it. This distinction is essential: understanding why a character acts is not the same as approving what she does.

Pugh’s approach asks for empathy, not forgiveness
Florence Pugh, who plays Cathy, described her interest in morally compromised characters as an effort to understand their decisions and make their stories larger than the fact that they have done evil. In Netflix’s cast guide, she says that trying to understand a character can create empathy. That is an account of her acting approach, not a demand that viewers forgive Cathy or a claim that her victims’ experiences matter less.
Why Kazan argues the reinterpretation still fits Steinbeck
Kazan’s clearest defense of the adaptation is her reading of the novel’s moral balance. In a Netflix interview about adapting the book, she says: “The book critiques Adam with his idea of perfection and goodness as much as it does Cathy with her idea of evil and that the world is bad and people are bad.” On that reading, the story is not simply a contest between a good man and a bad woman. Adam’s idealization of goodness is itself open to scrutiny, just as Cathy’s conviction that people are bad informs—but does not erase—her responsibility.

Kazan also recalls Steinbeck describing the project as “two books, the story of my country and the story of me.” She says she used Steinbeck’s letters to his editor while adapting the novel. Those details support her understanding of the story as both personal and national, but they do not settle whether the finished series is faithful. The stronger case is interpretive: giving Cathy more room can serve the novel’s moral questions if the story continues to examine both her agency and Adam’s ideal of goodness.
How it differs from the 1955 film
The main contrast is scope as well as point of view. The Daily Beast review says Elia Kazan’s 1955 film covered the novel’s final third, while Netflix’s seven-episode version has room for the earlier Trask generation and the later story involving Cal and Aron. The comparison is therefore not just a shorter versus longer retelling: it concerns which parts of the family saga are represented and whose history receives emphasis.

| Comparison | 1955 film | Netflix series |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | The Daily Beast review says it covered the novel’s final third. | Seven episodes; Netflix’s overview includes the wider Trask saga and Cal and Aron. |
| Point of view | The cited review establishes the film’s scope, but does not establish a comparable Cathy-centered emphasis. | Netflix’s official materials describe renewed focus on Cathy and the generations of the Trask family. |
| Adaptation format | Feature film released in 1955, according to The Daily Beast review. | Seven-episode limited series, according to Netflix. |
The available comparison supports a difference in breadth and declared emphasis; it does not establish a scene-by-scene account of either adaptation. The useful test for the series is whether its expanded attention to Cathy still leaves room for the Cal-and-Aron story and the novel’s wider questions about family, choice, and moral judgment.
What to watch for in the adaptation
- Context and accountability: Does the series make Cathy’s circumstances understandable while still registering the damage caused by her actions?
- More than a Cathy story: Does the Cathy-centered emphasis remain connected to the wider Trask family and the later generation?
- Goodness under scrutiny: Does the story question Adam’s ideal of perfection rather than treating goodness as a simple answer to Cathy’s evil?
- Interpretation rather than imitation: Does the adaptation use its expanded format to develop the novel’s concerns, rather than relying on the claim that a changed emphasis is automatically faithful?
Read the novel alongside the series
Reading Steinbeck’s East of Eden alongside the series offers a direct way to compare the novel’s narration of Cathy with the adaptation’s Cathy-centered framing. The contrast is especially useful for noticing how point of view shapes sympathy: a character can become more understandable on screen without becoming less accountable.
