The route is increasingly visible: NCAA.com reported a record 326 NHL Draft picks on NCAA rosters for the 2026–27 season. That is a roster count—not a measure of how many will reach the NHL or proof that college improves a player’s odds.
What development in college hockey looks like
College hockey gives a prospect an opportunity to keep competing within an NCAA team while pursuing a degree. A player’s role can change over time: a freshman may earn more responsibility as the season or college career progresses, then consider whether to sign a professional contract. The path is individual, not a guaranteed progression from campus to the NHL.
NCAA.com’s September 2026 guide describes NHL prospects spread across many Division I programs and NHL organizations. That distribution is a season snapshot, not a ranking of which schools develop players best. The available evidence establishes that prospects play college hockey, but it does not measure how much particular skills improve or identify a universally superior coaching system.
Being drafted does not mean leaving college immediately
Draft selection and signing a professional contract are separate events. NCAA.com’s October 2026 season preview reported 326 NHL Draft picks on NCAA rosters for 2026–27 and 19 NCAA players selected in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft; both were records according to the outlet. These figures show that drafted players can be on college rosters, not how many will sign, make an NHL roster, or succeed as professionals.

The same preview reported that Gavin McKenna became the sixth college hockey player selected No. 1 overall, joining a history that includes Erik Johnson in 2006, Owen Power in 2021, and Macklin Celebrini in 2024. A high draft position does not, by itself, determine when a player signs. A prospect’s rights, contract situation, personal plans, and NCAA eligibility all matter.
How the college route changed for former CHL players
Starting August 1, 2025, former players from the Canadian Hockey League’s WHL, OHL, and QMJHL became eligible to compete in NCAA hockey if they had not received compensation above actual and necessary expenses before enrolling. This opened a path from major junior into college that had previously been unavailable, but it is not automatic eligibility for every former CHL player. The NCAA’s rules and a player’s individual history still need to be assessed. NHL.com’s report on the eligibility change covers the announcement.

Drafts, money, camps, and other eligibility details
NCAA eligibility rules distinguish between being drafted and opting into certain professional drafts. In its April 15, 2026 update, the NCAA said its new draft-withdrawal requirement applies to opt-in professional drafts, but not to men’s ice hockey, where prospects can be drafted without opting in. The update also changed how pre-enrollment prize money is treated; it expressly said post-enrollment prize-money rules did not change. This is not blanket permission to accept any compensation or sign any contract. The NCAA’s announcement sets out the scope of those changes.
College Hockey Inc.’s FAQ says prospects may attend NHL development camps before full-time college enrollment and receive actual and necessary expenses for the camp period, including return travel. It also summarizes conditions involving agent representation agreements. Because eligibility can depend on an individual’s circumstances and NCAA rules are evolving, players should confirm their situation with the school’s compliance office and consult current NCAA guidance. College Hockey Inc.’s FAQ provides additional context.

What to weigh when choosing a route
There is no evidence here that college, major junior, or another pathway produces better NHL outcomes overall. A useful comparison is personal and practical:
- Competition and schedule: Consider the level and rhythm of play in the available options.
- Role and development environment: Ask what ice time, responsibilities, and coaching fit the player’s current needs.
- Academic fit: Weigh the value of enrolling in college and the campus experience alongside hockey priorities.
- Eligibility and compensation: Review prior leagues, payments, agreements, and planned activities with compliance staff.
- Professional timing: Consider NHL rights, contract terms, and readiness for the next level rather than assuming draft status dictates an immediate move.
The right choice depends on the player’s circumstances; a roster count or an individual success story cannot settle that comparison.
