Nintendo sunsets older consoles in stages, not with a single switch that makes the hardware unusable. The Wii Shop Channel stopped selling games in 2019; Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop sales ended in 2023; and most Wii U and 3DS online functions ended in 2024. Offline play remained, and Nintendo said some downloads would remain available for the foreseeable future—not forever.
What “sunset” means for a Nintendo console
A console’s services can end on different schedules. A store closing affects buying new content; a payment deadline can arrive earlier; and online multiplayer can continue for a time after sales stop. Redownloading games, local play, and hardware repair are separate questions. Nintendo’s notices for Wii, Wii U, and 3DS document the first five categories, but do not establish a general current repair policy.

That distinction matters if you are asking, “Can I still play my old Nintendo console after the online services shut down?” For Wii U and 3DS, the answer is yes for offline modes and local functions that do not depend on Nintendo’s servers. But a closed storefront or discontinued online feature cannot be restored simply by owning the console or a used copy of a game.

These dates reflect Nintendo of America’s guidance. Exact local shutdown times can differ by region; Nintendo’s Japanese announcement, for example, gives a Japan-local time.

What still works on Wii U and 3DS?
Offline play and local communication
Nintendo says Wii U and 3DS offline functions and modes remain usable. On 3DS, StreetPass uses local communication between nearby systems and remained available under the notice. SpotPass depends on online communication, so its features are no longer available. Redownloading purchases and updates
Nintendo said purchased software and downloadable content could still be redownloaded, and update data downloaded, “for the foreseeable future.” That is a time-qualified statement, not a permanent guarantee or an announced end date. If you depend on an older console, downloading content you already own while Nintendo’s access remains available may be prudent; the notice does not promise the service will remain indefinitely. Exceptions and other publishers’ services
Nintendo listed Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter among services that could still work after the general shutdown, while warning they could end later. It also notes that some third-party services may be exceptions and directs users to the relevant publishers for their status. Do not assume every online feature for every game ended on the same date. The Wii Shop Channel had been available since December 2006 and stopped selling software on January 30, 2019, after more than twelve years. Nintendo described the sales closure separately from the future end of WiiWare and Virtual Console redownloads and the Wii System Transfer Tool; its support page did not give a date for those later functions. The shop’s video-on-demand services ended around the time of the storefront closure, but the cited notice does not say every Wii network service ended on January 30, 2019. Nintendo said customers had shifted to Nintendo eShop on newer systems and that it planned to focus efforts there. What to check before relying on an older console
- Need to buy something? Wii U and 3DS eShop purchases, free downloads, and code redemption have ended; Wii Shop software sales ended in 2019.
- Need an online mode? General Wii U and 3DS online play and internet-dependent functions ended in April 2024. Check the game publisher for any third-party exception.
- Need a game you already own? Nintendo said Wii U and 3DS purchases and updates remained downloadable for the foreseeable future, with no permanent guarantee.
- Want local or offline play? Nintendo says offline modes remain; 3DS StreetPass local communication continued under its notice, unlike SpotPass features.
- Considering used hardware? A used Wii U or 3DS can still serve for offline play, but its condition and availability vary, and buying one does not bring back discontinued official services.
- Need a repair? These service-closure notices do not establish whether Nintendo currently repairs a particular older model or in a particular region. Check Nintendo’s regional support information for the exact system.
