As of October 2, 2026, 18 goaltenders had been credited with 21 goals in NHL games: 19 in the regular season and two in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, according to the NHL’s October 2 historical account. Igor Shesterkin became the 18th goalie on the list with a goal on October 1, 2026. The total counts goals, not goal-scoring goalies: Ron Hextall and Martin Brodeur scored more than once.
How rare is a goalie goal?
It is an unusual event, but the NHL’s published figure is a cumulative total, not a rate. The league’s account reports 21 goals by 18 distinct goaltenders; it does not calculate goals per game, per season, or per goalie appearance. Without a corresponding denominator, those rates cannot be stated from the published total. The NHL lists goalie scoring as a record category, and its records page labels the displayed coverage as 1917–18 through 2025–26: NHL Records.
How can a goaltender be credited with a goal?
A goalie does not have to shoot the puck into the opposing net to earn a goal. The NHL account divides the 21 goals into two kinds of play:
- Shot into an empty net: 12 goaltenders scored this way; Ron Hextall did it twice.
- Opponent’s own goal: The other eight goals were credited to the goalie who was the last teammate to touch the puck before an opponent accidentally sent it into their own net.
These categories explain why a goalie can receive credit without taking the final shot. The NHL’s October 2, 2026 event-by-event history describes the goals and the credited players: NHL goalies who have scored.
