There is no official ad interval that YouTube recommends for every 24/7 live stream. A sensible starting point is automatic mid-rolls at medium frequency: YouTube says this setting aims to place ads at natural breakpoints, but medium is a practical test—not a platform rule or guaranteed optimum. Check viewer response and live-stream revenue in YouTube Analytics, then adjust.
What ad-frequency options does YouTube offer?
For a monetized live stream with monetization enabled, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled. Creators can choose automatic or scheduled mid-rolls, or insert mid-rolls manually. The available controls and labels may change; consult YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance for the current interface.
| Option | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Choose low, medium, or high frequency. YouTube aims to place ads at natural breakpoints; different viewers may receive ads at different times. | YouTube recommends this option. It provides less control over exact timing. |
| Scheduled | Set a mid-roll interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | The interval is predictable, but a break may not align with a natural pause. YouTube warns scheduled choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode. |
| Manual | Insert individual mid-roll breaks while live. | You control placement, but if you insert no breaks, YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served. YouTube warns manual choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode. |
YouTube does not publish a 24/7-specific frequency formula. The best choice depends on what is playing, how often natural pauses occur, how viewers respond to interruptions, and your monetization goals.
How often should you start?
Try automatic at medium first
For a continuous stream, automatic at medium is a reasonable starting test if you want YouTube to seek natural breakpoints without beginning at the highest frequency. This is practical guidance based on the available controls, not an official recommendation for 24/7 channels. YouTube’s breakpoint approach may suit programming with few pauses better than a fixed interval, but it does not guarantee that every ad will land at a viewer-friendly moment.

Adjust based on the stream and audience
- If viewers report too many interruptions or you see retention concerns, test a lower automatic setting.
- If you need predictable spacing and your programming has regular pauses, compare a scheduled interval with automatic mode.
- If you need precise control over individual moments, use manual breaks—but remember that no inserted breaks means no mid-rolls.
Change one setting at a time where practical, and review the result in YouTube Analytics’ Live revenue view alongside viewer response. Ad frequency is a control, not a promise that an ad will be shown to each viewer.
What happens to viewers when an ad break is due?
An ad slot is not guaranteed to serve an ad. If no ad runs, the viewer continues watching. Viewers who do see an ad rejoin the live stream when it ends or when they skip it. Automatic mode can limit mid-roll disruption for channel members, pause mid-rolls temporarily for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze ads for everyone during high-engagement moments.

Delay ads during an important moment
You can delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes in Live Control Room when a high-value moment is underway. This is useful for a live event, match, or other moment where an interruption would be unwelcome. Note the limitation: manually placed mid-rolls still display while Delay ads is active, so manual breaks need separate planning.
What does YouTube’s revenue figure mean?
YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour. YouTube says it compared average instream revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls with channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. This is a platform-reported comparison, not proof that automatic ads caused the difference or a forecast for a particular channel—especially a 24/7 stream.

Use that figure as context for YouTube’s preference for automatic mid-rolls, not as a reason to maximize ad frequency regardless of viewer experience. Your own Live revenue and audience response are more relevant to choosing a setting for your channel.
