The adjustment is described as a combination of the result, your performance on the selected hero compared with players of that hero and rank, the estimated strength of your team, and the opposing team’s strength. Exact scoring, resets, placements and party rules can change by season, so use the current in-game Competitive rules for Season 10 rather than assuming an older season’s numbers still apply.
What determines a rank change?
The available developer explanation, reported by PC Gamer on August 22, 2025, describes a weighted adjustment rather than a fixed “win equals X points” system. Four factors matter:
- Match result: wins move you toward promotion and losses move you toward demotion.
- Hero-specific performance: your performance on the hero you played is compared with other players using that hero at the same rank.
- Estimated team skill: the system uses the average skill of the players on each team to estimate which side was stronger.
- Opponent strength: beating a stronger team is valued differently from beating a weaker one.
A stronger team is reported to gain fewer points for a win and lose more for a defeat than the weaker side would in the same matchup. Individual performance also has less influence higher on the ladder. The explanation does not publish an exact formula, point table or weighting, so claims such as a guaranteed number of points per win are not established.
The ranked ladder
The latest published ladder description located for this topic is an All Things How guide updated June 22, 2026 for Season 8.5. It lists nine named ranks. Because the official Season 10 patch notes reviewed for this article do not restate the complete ladder rules, treat the table as that guide’s dated description, not a confirmed Season 10 specification.

Under that guide’s model, the first seven ranks contain three divisions, with 100 points required to move through each tier. Eternity is presented as a points leaderboard, while One Above All is reserved for the top 500. Check the Competitive screen in your client for the live Season 10 implementation.
Why two players can gain or lose different amounts
Hero performance is comparative
The reported developer explanation compares your chosen hero’s performance with other players on that hero and at your rank. A strong statistical game can therefore affect the adjustment, but the comparison is not described as a simple personal score or a universal performance bonus.
Team estimates change the risk
Matchmaking estimates each team’s aggregate skill. If your team is rated stronger, a win is expected to be worth less and a loss more costly; if your team is rated weaker, the relationship reverses. This is why an identical scoreline does not necessarily produce an identical point change in different matches.

Performance matters less at higher ranks
The developer account says individual performance has less influence as players climb. At higher levels, the match result and the strength estimates therefore carry relatively more weight than personal statistics.
Placements and seasonal changes
Placement and carryover rules are not permanent system laws. They have changed between seasons and even between portions of a season.
Season 5 placement example
The official Season 5 patch notes said a player’s first 10 ranked matches were placement matches. They distinguished a predicted matchmaking rank from the rank actually assigned after all ten games and used previous-season results to inform the estimated starting rank. This proves that placements have been used, but it does not confirm that Season 10 uses the same process.

Season 1 split carryover example
In a February 11, 2025 developer post about the second half of Season 1, Marvel Rivals stated: “When the second half of the season begins, there will be no rank reset. Players will retain their ranks and scores from the end of the first half.” The same post said players needed 10 Competitive matches to earn the specified second-half rewards. That was a Season 1 adjustment, not a guarantee for later seasons.
Reset size has also changed
An older Season 1.5 note described a nine-division demotion based on final rank, while the June 2026 Season 8.5 guide described a reset of about seven tiers. These figures belong to different time periods and should not be used as a Season 10 rule without a current announcement.
Season 10 reward
The official Season 10 patch notes name the Gold-tier costume reward as Gorr the God Butcher – Gods’ Graveyard. The captured ranked section does not specify every current eligibility condition, the complete reward table, or the exact number of matches required, so confirm those requirements in the live season information.

Unlocks and bans: claims that need a current check
The June 2026 All Things How guide says Competitive unlocks at Level 15 and that hero bans begin at Gold 3. Those are secondary-source claims tied to its Season 8.5 coverage. The official Season 10 material reviewed here does not confirm either threshold; use the Competitive menu and current Season 10 announcement as the authority.
How to check the rules that apply to you
- Open Marvel Rivals and enter the Competitive mode screen.
- Read the current season’s rules, rank, reward and matchmaking notices shown there.
- After a match, record the points change and whether the screen identifies a placement, promotion, demotion or protection state.
- For reset, decay, placement, party-size or ban questions, rely on a current official season post rather than an older guide.
The Season 10 notes available for this topic identify the Gold reward but do not publish a complete current scoring formula, reset schedule, decay policy, placement requirement or party restriction. Those details must be verified in the current client or an official Season 10 rules announcement.
