In Sifu, choosing to rise after death adds years equal to your current death-counter number: the first death adds one year, the next adds two, and the next adds three if you have not reduced the counter. The protagonist starts at 20. Aging lowers maximum health while increasing offensive power; it does not make your abilities weaker. Shrines and certain enemies can reduce the counter, and finishing a chapter resets it—but neither makes you younger.

What the death counter means

The pendant revives the protagonist after death, but each revival advances their age. The counter beside the death icon determines how many years the next revival adds. If it has risen to three, for example, the next death adds three years—not one. Sloclap explains this escalating rule in its PlayStation.Blog explanation of Sifu’s combat and progression, published November 18, 2021.

The counter can be reduced during a run, so its value is not necessarily the number of times you have died overall. What matters for the next age increase is the counter value at the time you die.

How aging changes combat

Age shifts the balance between defense and offense: maximum health decreases while offensive power increases. Sloclap says aging does not weaken the protagonist’s abilities and that the game can be completed at any age. The trade-off is still consequential: with less health, mistakes can become harder to absorb, even as attacks gain power.

How to reduce the counter—and what cannot be reversed

  • Shrines: Shrine options can lower or reset the death counter, depending on the rules for your difficulty.
  • Certain enemies: Defeating some enemies, including chapter bosses, can reduce it.
  • Chapter completion: Finishing a chapter resets the counter for the next stretch.

These actions affect the counter, not age. In the standard system Sloclap describes, there is no way to regain years already lost. Completing a chapter therefore stops the current counter from carrying forward, but your age at the chapter’s end remains part of your ongoing progression.

When a death ends the run

The pendant eventually stops reviving the protagonist, resulting in a definitive game over. EIP Gaming’s Sifu aging and death-counter guide, published in February 2022 and updated that month, places the final-death condition at age 70 or above. Treat 70 as a guide-reported threshold rather than a value confirmed here against current-version documentation.

What carries over after a chapter or game over

Chapter completion and game over have different consequences. Each completed chapter creates a save point at the age you reached; you can continue from there or replay a chapter to improve your performance and the age you carry forward. Replaying is useful when you want to reach later chapters in better shape, but it does not erase age from a chapter you continue beyond.

During a run, shrine upgrades such as health, focus charges, maximum structure, and weapon durability are not lost just because you die. A game over is more severe: upgrades and skills unlocked for the current run are lost. Skills can be unlocked from the death screen, at the Wuguan between missions, or at shrines. Sloclap also says you can invest additional experience to make skills permanent, so they are available at the start of a new run. EIP reports that a skill becomes permanent after five total purchases; that specific purchase count is guide-reported.

Gurei - PlayStation 5
  • You are free to pick your fights against the Kami in any order. The game features a dynamic difficulty system where each enemy strength is defined by the player’s chosen path. This means that the very same Kami fought at the very beginning could also be the final boss in a different route. Hope to never leave the one you struggle most to fight last!
  • Besides sword attacks, dodges, head stomps and other basic abilities, Rei will learn a completely new skill for each defeated Kami. Those will provide further depth to your combat arsenal, be it a stronger dash, a weapon that can execute enemies, the ability to heal and many more!
  • Player choice is the ultimate power. Taking into account the vastly distinct enemies’ patterns and unique skills granted upon each victory, you will be able to decide how to approach every challenge. It won’t be easy either way, but you can always go back and try something different.
  • Gurei is a game about fighting strong enemies, but that’s not all. The Kami inhabit a surreal castle located between the human and spirit worlds. After each victory, Rei comes closer to the realm of spirits, starting to encounter peculiar characters from Japanese mythology. These creatures will add novelty and strangeness to your journey, providing commentary, unique animations, side objectives and obscure secrets.
  • You will get to know the different Kami quite well. When Rei defeats them, she absorbs their power and their personality. The defeated Kami will be carried around wherever Rei goes, and they’ll surely have stuff to talk about. Sometimes their remarks will be useful information that builds the player’s understanding of the lore and the game mechanics, but sometimes they will be... not so helpful, to put it briefly. Good luck!

Check your difficulty’s aging rules

Do not assume the standard counter behavior applies unchanged to every difficulty. A Steam Community guide by JAG, updated March 2, 2026, reports that Student difficulty adds one year per death and offers a shrine option that reduces age by five years; it describes Disciple as using the default counter-based system. That is community-authored guidance, not official patch documentation. Check the current in-game difficulty rules and shrine options for your version before relying on those differences.

A practical way to manage age

  1. Check the counter before pushing forward. The next death adds the counter’s current value, so a growing number raises the cost of another mistake.
  2. Decide whether a shrine reduction is worth the resource. It can limit the years added by a later death, while other shrine upgrades may help you survive the current stretch.
  3. Use chapter completion as a reset point, not a rejuvenation. The counter resets, but the age you reached remains.
  4. If the age carried into a later chapter is too high for your strategy, replay an earlier chapter. Chapter saves let you continue or replay to improve performance before moving on.
  5. Verify the selected difficulty’s rules. Student’s reported aging and age-reduction options differ from the default pattern.
