Singapore’s museums show the country’s diverse heritage through different, complementary perspectives—not one institution speaking for every community. The National Museum of Singapore offers a broad national story, while the Indian Heritage Centre, Malay Heritage Centre and Peranakan Museum explore distinct histories, cultural exchanges and forms of expression. Together, they offer a useful way to understand how Singapore’s multicultural past is represented in museums.
How the museums’ perspectives fit together
These museums are not interchangeable versions of the same collection. They differ in the communities and places they focus on, and in whether they foreground national history, community histories, movement and exchange, or material culture. The examples below are selective, not a complete directory of Singapore museums or a measure of how evenly every community is represented.
| Museum | Scope | Interpretive focus |
|---|---|---|
| Indian Heritage Centre | Indian and South Asian communities in Singapore and Southeast Asia | History, trade and community |
| Malay Heritage Centre | Singapore’s Malay community and the Malay Archipelago | Community history, movement, trade and cultural exchange |
| Peranakan Museum | Peranakan art and culture in Southeast Asia | Material culture and contemporary art, fashion, design and craft |
| National Museum of Singapore | Singapore’s national history and culture | A broad national narrative; current gallery offer is changing during a revamp |
Indian Heritage Centre: Indian and South Asian histories
In Little India, the Indian Heritage Centre traces the histories of Indian and South Asian communities in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Its four-storey building has permanent galleries spanning history, trade and community, along with a special exhibition gallery and educational spaces. Its location also makes it a natural starting point for exploring the surrounding historic precinct.
Malay Heritage Centre: history across the Malay Archipelago
The Malay Heritage Centre presents the history, culture and contributions of Singapore’s Malay community. Its permanent exhibition follows centuries of movement, trade and cultural exchange across the Malay Archipelago, placing local history in a wider regional context.

The centre is housed in the former 19th-century Istana Kampong Gelam, a National Monument. The National Heritage Board manages it in partnership with the Malay Heritage Foundation. Its setting in Kampong Gelam connects the museum visit with a historic neighbourhood, but the centre should not be treated as representing every Malay experience.
Peranakan Museum: asking what “Peranakan” means
The Peranakan Museum explores Peranakan art and culture in Southeast Asia. Its refreshed permanent galleries bring objects of material culture together with contemporary work in art, fashion, design and craft by local and regional artists, artisans and designers. Across three floors, the galleries approach Peranakan life through origins, home and style.

The museum invites visitors to ask “what is Peranakan?” That question suits an institution whose subject is explored through both historical objects and contemporary expression, rather than reduced to a single definition.
National Museum of Singapore: a broader national frame
Opened in 1887, the National Museum describes itself as Singapore’s oldest museum. Its national scope complements the community-focused institutions: it offers a broader account of Singapore’s history and culture rather than centring one community’s story.
