Spencer Jones struck out to open the Yankees’ sixth inning against Boston, reached first when a wild pitch got away, scored in a six-run rally, then struck out again to end the frame. The sequence hinged on a replay review overturning the initial out call on a dropped third strike.
How Jones reached first after striking out
The Yankees led 2-1 when Jones came up to start the bottom of the sixth against Boston starter Garrett Crochet. Jones swung over a sweeper in the dirt, and the pitch got past catcher Adley Rutschman. Jones ran toward first as the ball escaped.
First-base umpire John Libka initially called Jones out. The Yankees appealed, and the video umpire at the commissioner’s office reversed the call. Jones was allowed to reach first on the dropped third strike and wild pitch. In this play, the strikeout was recorded, but the ball getting away gave Jones a chance to reach base before the defense completed the out.
How Jones scored in the six-run inning
Jones stole second. Rutschman’s throw skipped into center field, allowing Jones to advance to third on the error. George Lombard Jr. then singled Jones home.

The rally continued: Austin Wells hit a sacrifice fly, Ryan McMahon grounded out to bring in another run, Ben Rice was intentionally walked, and Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer. Jones came to bat again later in the inning and struck out against Garrett Whitlock’s slider to end it.
What made the sequence historic
According to the Associated Press report of the Elias Sports Bureau finding, Jones became the first player in postseason history to score in an inning that he both started and ended with a strikeout. Elias also found that no player had done so in the regular season since the expansion era began in 1969. That is a specific record: it is not a claim that Jones was the first player ever to strike out twice and score in any inning.

Bellinger captured the oddity afterward: “Baseball can be a wacky sport,” he said. “You see something new every day.” Jones described his part in the play this way: “It’s a great thing to be able to get on the bases I guess any way possible, but I was always told if you run hard, good things are going to happen, and that turned out to be the case.”

The Yankees scored six runs in the sixth and beat Boston 9-2, sweeping the two-game Wild Card Series. Jones’s unusual inning was one part of that rally, not a measure of his usual performance. MLB’s earlier coverage described Jones as a rookie prospect called up during the 2026 season and discussed his strikeout tendencies, but this single game sequence does not establish how representative it was of his season.
