It helps a receiver recover missing packets, manage jitter and protect media payloads with AES encryption. Those mechanisms can make a feed more resilient on an unpredictable network, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted delivery or a fixed end-to-end delay: recovery needs time, the network needs enough capacity, and both endpoints must support compatible SRT settings.
What SRT is—and where it fits
SRT is a transport protocol, not a video codec, encoder, or complete production platform. It carries media between sending and receiving equipment or software in a contribution or distribution workflow. The video and audio are processed by the endpoints; SRT handles their transport across the IP path. Haivision’s SRT introduction describes the protocol as adapting to real-time network conditions between endpoints.
The distinction matters when planning a workflow: using SRT does not by itself create a live program, encode video, or publish it to a viewing platform. It addresses the network link between compatible parts of a larger system.
How SRT handles packet loss and jitter
ARQ requests missing packets again
The receiver tracks incoming data and can detect missing packets. SRT’s primary loss-recovery method is Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ): when the receiver identifies a gap, it requests that the sender retransmit the missing data. If the packet arrives in time for playback, retransmission can help repair the feed rather than leave a gap. The Haivision-maintained SRT project README identifies ARQ as the primary recovery method.

Latency provides room for recovery
A retransmission takes time to travel back to the sender and return to the receiver. SRT therefore manages latency and buffers data so that late or retransmitted packets may still arrive before they are needed. That delay is part of the recovery strategy, not an optional bonus: a tighter latency budget leaves less time to repair loss.
FEC and bonding are additional options
The SRT project also lists Forward Error Correction (FEC) and connection bonding among its capabilities. They address different recovery or redundancy needs, but their availability in the protocol does not mean they are enabled in every device or deployment. Check what each endpoint actually supports and how the options are configured.

None of these mechanisms makes a poor connection unlimited. If the path is too impaired, available bandwidth is inadequate, or packets cannot return within the configured latency budget, SRT cannot promise a perfect stream. Its recovery improves the chances of clean delivery under suitable conditions; it is not a guarantee against every network failure.
What “low latency” means in practice
The SRT project describes SRT as a sub-second live transport protocol. That is a description of the protocol’s class, not a promise of a particular glass-to-glass delay for every workflow. Total delay also depends on encoding and decoding, buffers, the configured SRT latency, network routing and congestion, and receiver processing. The official material cited here does not establish one universal latency setting or benchmark.

Choose settings around the production’s actual delay tolerance and network conditions. More time in the recovery buffer can give retransmissions a chance to arrive, while a very tight delay limit reduces that opportunity. Consider these factors together:
- Latency tolerance: How much delay can viewers or downstream production steps accept?
- Path conditions: What loss, jitter, congestion, and bandwidth variation are expected between the endpoints?
- Capacity headroom: Can the path carry the media reliably when conditions fluctuate?
- Recovery design: Is retransmission sufficient, or does the use case call for FEC or path redundancy?
- End-to-end processing: What delay is introduced by the encoders, decoders, and other buffers outside SRT?
What SRT encryption protects—and what it does not
The SRT project says that SRT uses AES encryption to protect media-stream payloads. Haivision also describes encryption for contribution and distribution. In practical terms, treat this as protection for the media payload between configured endpoints—not as encryption of every part of a broadcast workflow.

SRT encryption does not secure the endpoint computers, protect credentials that are exposed elsewhere, or replace access controls and careful passphrase handling. Secure the machines and services at both ends, restrict access appropriately, and protect any credentials used to configure the connection. The project README and Haivision’s SRT product overview describe the protocol’s payload-encryption role.

Start with the workflow rather than buying equipment based on the protocol name alone. SRT must be supported at the relevant sending and receiving endpoints, and those endpoints must interoperate with the settings your production needs.

- Verify both endpoints. Confirm SRT support on the sending and receiving software or hardware, then check compatibility and available settings at both ends.
- Set the delay budget. Account for SRT latency as well as encoding, decoding, routing, and downstream buffers. Confirm the total delay fits the production’s tolerance.
- Assess the network path. Estimate the expected loss, jitter, bandwidth variation, and available headroom. Recovery cannot overcome persistent congestion or insufficient capacity.
- Choose a recovery approach. Determine whether ARQ meets the use case or whether the endpoints and workflow need FEC or connection redundancy. Do not assume an option is active just because SRT supports it.
- Review security configuration. Check how each endpoint enables encryption and how passphrases or related credentials are created, shared, stored, and restricted.
- Decide between software and hardware. A software endpoint may suit some workflows; others may require dedicated encoding or decoding equipment. Make that choice after confirming the required features and compatibility.
The open-source project provides a library and sample applications, including srt-live-transmit. For a hardware example, Haivision documents SRT support on its Makito X Series encoders and decoders. These examples establish software and hardware options, not a universal purchasing recommendation. The Makito documentation covers that product family. Haivision’s documentation index identifies version 1.5.4 as the latest while the linked SRT pages shown are for version 1.5.3; check the current documentation for the implementation you use, since versions can change. See the SRT documentation index.
Common SRT problems to investigate
- The receiver does not get a usable feed: Check that both endpoints support SRT, that the connection details and settings match, and that the network path permits traffic between them.
- Video or audio still breaks up: Investigate packet loss, jitter, congestion, and bandwidth headroom. Retransmission can only help when missing data can return in time; confirm the latency budget and whether the chosen recovery options are supported and configured at both ends.
- Delay is higher than expected: Look beyond SRT. Encoding, decoding, configured latency, routing, congestion, and buffers elsewhere in the workflow all contribute to end-to-end delay.
- The connection is encrypted but the workflow is not secure: Treat SRT as payload protection between endpoints. Review endpoint security, credential handling, and access controls separately.
Or let it run in the cloud
SRT is a transport option for moving media between compatible endpoints; it is not a service for keeping a pre-recorded YouTube channel live around the clock. For that separate use case, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free day.
Adoption context
The SRT Alliance homepage says that more than 700 broadcasters, cloud platforms, device manufacturers, and streaming providers rely on SRT. The page does not state a publication year for that figure, so it should be read as the Alliance’s own adoption claim rather than an independently dated or audited count. See the SRT Alliance.
