A Steam demo is a separate library app linked to a full game, and whether its save survives removal or transfers to the full game depends on that game’s developer. Before uninstalling, check the game’s cloud-save support and save-transfer instructions; don’t assume Steam will preserve or carry over every demo save.
What a Steam demo is
Steamworks treats a demo as a separate app with its own App ID, associated with the full game’s App ID. A developer may offer it from the full game’s store page or give it a separate demo page. It therefore appears as its own library entry rather than simply acting as a temporary mode inside the full game.
The developer configures how the demo relates to the full game. Steamworks allows developers to share installed content and, separately, to share the full game’s Steam Cloud storage with a demo. Shared cloud storage can let a player continue a demo save after buying the full game, but it is an option—not a platform-wide guarantee. Steamworks’ demo documentation describes this setup.
How to install and launch a demo
- Find the game’s Steam store page or its demo listing.
- Choose the demo’s install or download control. The exact label can vary in the Steam client.
- After installation, open the demo from its entry in your Steam Library.
Will a demo save carry over to the full game?
Possibly, but only if the game’s implementation supports it. A save may be stored locally, in Steam Cloud, or in both places. The developer decides whether the demo uses the full game’s cloud storage and whether the full game can read the demo’s save format. Steam Cloud support by itself does not establish that a demo save is compatible with the full game.

Look for the Steam Cloud indicator on the game’s store page, then check the developer’s documentation, support page, or community information for explicit instructions about demo-save transfer. Steam Cloud is optional and customizable, and the store indicator does not identify every file a game synchronizes. Steam Support’s Steam Cloud guidance explains the feature and its limits.
Does uninstalling a Steam demo delete its save?
There is no universal answer. Removing the demo and deleting its save are not necessarily the same action: a game may keep a local save, sync data to Steam Cloud, or use both. But neither preservation nor transfer is guaranteed across all games. Check the game’s save-location and cloud-sync instructions before removing files, and make a copy of an important local save if you can identify it.
Steam Support says third-party developers decide how and where their games store save files. Its backup guidance recommends checking the game’s community or developer for the correct save location. A Steam game backup should not be assumed to include every save stored outside Steam’s usual game files.
Before you uninstall: protect the save
- Check cloud support: Look for the Steam Cloud indicator and consult the game’s own support information to learn what is synchronized and whether demo progress transfers.
- Let syncing finish: If Steam Cloud is enabled, allow Steam to complete synchronization before removing the demo.
- Back up a known local save: If you can locate the save, copy it somewhere safe before deleting files or making broader changes to Steam.
- Take cloud conflicts seriously: If Steam asks which version to keep, compare the displayed timestamps with when and where you last played. Steam cannot automatically choose between versions changed in different places without synchronization; Offline Mode can delay syncing and contribute to conflicts. Steam Support lists these default locations for Steam Cloud data: Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata, macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata, and Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata. These are default cloud-data folders, not universal paths for local game saves. For saves outside Steam Cloud, DocumentsMy Games is one common location, but each game can differ. Steam Support’s installation and save-location FAQ advises checking with the developer when the files are elsewhere.

How to uninstall a demo—and what not to confuse it with
Remove the demo from its library entry using the Steam client’s uninstall option; client labels and layout can change. This removes the installed demo, but does not answer by itself what happens to that game’s save. Follow the game-specific checks above if the save matters.
Uninstalling the Steam client is a much broader operation than removing one demo. Steam’s Windows instructions warn that uninstalling the client removes installed game content and recommend moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first if you want to keep installed game files. If a demo is no longer available
Developer deactivation is different from a player uninstalling a demo. Steamworks says people who already have a deactivated demo in their library can still see it and uninstall it, but cannot launch it. If you may want to continue playing, check the game’s availability before removing it.
