SteamVR is part of the PC-play route, not a guarantee that every SteamVR game runs standalone. The key compatibility question is whether you plan to stream a game from your PC or run it directly on the headset.
Two ways to play: stream from a PC or run games locally
Steam Frame is designed primarily for PC game streaming, but Valve also describes it as a SteamOS-based PC that can run supported games on the headset without a connected computer. Those are separate play modes, with different hardware and compatibility considerations. Valve’s Steam Frame page says you can stream your entire Steam library, while its Standalone Verified program identifies titles that work locally.
Streaming from your PC
In the streaming path, the PC runs the game and sends its audio and visuals wirelessly to Steam Frame. Valve includes a plug-and-play 6 GHz wireless adapter for a dedicated streaming connection. The headset also has Wi-Fi 7 and dual radios: Valve says one radio is dedicated to streaming and the other to Wi-Fi. Its Multi-Link Streaming feature is described as routing data over available headset connections to improve reliability and consistency; Valve does not provide a guaranteed latency or image-quality result on the product page.
Standalone play
Steam Frame can also run a growing selection of VR and non-VR games locally. Valve lists a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and 16 GB of unified memory in the headset. A title being in your Steam library—or being playable through SteamVR on a PC—does not by itself establish that it will run on the headset.

What SteamVR does—and what it does not mean for Steam Frame
SteamVR is Valve’s PC-side virtual reality platform. It supports several PC headset families, including Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality headsets, and other supported devices. For Steam Frame, SteamVR is relevant to the streamed PC experience: the game runs on the PC, while the headset receives the stream.
SteamVR compatibility and Steam Frame Standalone Verified answer different questions. SteamVR compatibility concerns a game’s use with the PC VR platform and a supported PC headset. Standalone Verified is intended to indicate that a game offers a good out-of-the-box experience when run directly on Steam Frame. Valve says its standalone checks consider game performance, whether text and UI are clear and legible, and controller configuration. The program does not mean that every SteamVR game is available or suitable to run locally.

Valve announced Steam Frame Standalone Verified on June 4, 2026, describing it as focused on the experience customers will have with the device in standalone mode. Check the game’s status for the mode you intend to use rather than relying on a broad label such as “SteamVR compatible.” Valve’s Steamworks announcement explains the program.
SteamVR PC requirements: a baseline, not a Steam Frame streaming guarantee
Valve’s SteamVR store listing publishes the following minimum requirements. These apply to SteamVR as listed by Valve; they are not a dedicated Steam Frame streaming specification, and meeting them does not guarantee that every demanding game will perform well.

| Component | SteamVR minimum | Recommended graphics |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or later for the Steam client. The listing includes older OS entries but notes that the Steam Client only supports Windows 10 and later. | Not stated by Valve’s SteamVR listing. |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better | Not stated by Valve’s SteamVR listing. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Not stated by Valve’s SteamVR listing. |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent or better | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 |
| Internet | Broadband internet | Not stated by Valve’s SteamVR listing. |
These figures come from Valve’s SteamVR listing. Valve’s Steam Frame product page does not state a separate numeric PC specification for streaming, a home Wi-Fi speed threshold, or a guaranteed latency. For a specific game, also check that game’s own requirements; a PC meeting SteamVR’s baseline may still be insufficient for a more demanding title.
How to check whether your setup and game fit
- Choose the play mode. Decide whether the PC will run the game and stream it to the headset, or whether Steam Frame will run it locally.
- Check the game’s compatibility for that mode. For standalone play, look for Steam Frame Standalone Verified status. For streamed PC VR, check the game’s SteamVR compatibility and requirements.
- Compare your PC with the relevant requirements. Use Valve’s SteamVR minimums as a baseline for SteamVR, not as a performance promise for Steam Frame or for every game.
- Account for the wireless environment. Steam Frame’s package description includes a dedicated 6 GHz adapter, but Valve does not publish a numeric network-speed threshold or guaranteed latency on the reviewed product page.
What Valve’s published details establish
Valve presents Steam Frame as streaming-first while also supporting standalone play. Its product page lists a 2160 × 2160 LCD resolution per eye, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16 GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, and the included 6 GHz wireless adapter. These specifications describe the device; they do not establish independent streaming performance figures. Valve’s product page reviewed here gives no third-party benchmark or independently measured latency or image-quality result for PC streaming.
