How the whistle was recovered
Witnesses in Redding saw an earlier appeal from the Sutherlin Police Department and passed information to investigators. Sutherlin police coordinated with the Redding Police Department, and Redding officers located and recovered the whistle there, according to The Roseburg Receiver’s October 5, 2026 report.
The recovery followed a brief period when the whistle’s whereabouts were unknown. On October 2, local reports said an investigation had led to an arrest in California, but the whistle had not been found during the search. The arrest report did not yet resolve where the artifact was; the later witness information did.
Which whistle was recovered
It was the Star Brass steam whistle cut from the City of Sutherlin’s 1921 Cooke oil-fired steam locomotive on September 15, 2026. Local coverage identifies it as a five-chime whistle. The locomotive is displayed in Central Park with a coal car and an original caboose, as described in KQEN News Radio’s October 2 report and The Roseburg Receiver’s October 2 report.

Why the locomotive is part of Sutherlin’s history
The city’s account, relayed by local reporting, links the Cooke locomotive to the regional logging era. Steam engines like it hauled logs and timber products from the Cascade Mountains above Sutherlin. The theft removed a distinctive piece from a public display that connects the town’s Central Park with that working history.
What is not yet known about the whistle
The October 5 recovery report does not say who currently holds the whistle, whether it was damaged, or when—or whether—it will be reinstalled on the locomotive. It also does not describe a preservation plan. Those details have not been established in the available reporting.
