On Nintendo Switch 2, save files stay in the console’s system memory, while downloaded software, updates, and downloadable content can be stored on a microSD Express card. Physical games vary: a regular game card and a game-key card are different formats, and a game-key card requires you to download the full game before playing.
Where Switch 2 game data is stored
“Cartridge data” can mean several different things: game software supplied with a physical release, later updates, downloadable content (DLC), or save files. Those do not all live in the same place.
- Save files: Nintendo says game save data is stored in the console’s system memory, whether you play from a game card or downloaded software. Saves cannot be copied to microSD Express. For most games, save data is associated with the selected user. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 Data Management FAQ.
- Downloaded software, updates, and DLC: These can be stored on microSD Express. They are software data, not save files.
- Game data on a physical release: The format matters. A game-key card is a download key, not a card containing the full game. Nintendo’s general support information does not establish that every regular game card contains every update or the same amount of game data; check the specific title’s package or official listing.
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some space reserved for system use. Nintendo says extra storage is not currently required to play any individual game, though it can provide more room for downloaded games, updates, and DLC.
Do Switch 2 physical games need downloads?
It depends on the card format. Nintendo supports regular game cards and game-key cards, and a title’s packaging or official store listing identifies which format it uses.

Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download game-key card data. Its Game-Key Card Overview explains the download and launch requirements.
Can you play a game-key card offline?
Yes, after its initial download and first launch. Nintendo requires internet access for that first launch, but says subsequent launches can be offline. Keep the game-key card inserted when playing; it remains necessary even though the game data is downloaded to the console or microSD Express.

How to download a game update
To check for an update using Nintendo’s support procedure:
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game without starting it.
- Press the + or − button to open the software menu.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
Nintendo lists software updates among the data that can be stored on microSD Express. Its general support material does not describe the patch internals or promise identical storage behavior for every game. What SD card does Switch 2 use?
For Switch 2 storage expansion, Nintendo specifies microSD Express. Check that the product listing names microSD Express; a generic microSD card is not the format Nintendo identifies for Switch 2 software storage. Nintendo does not specify a preferred brand or recommend one capacity for everyone.
MicroSD Express can hold software, updates, and DLC, but not save files. Saves remain in system memory, so choosing a larger expansion card does not move or back up game progress.

Which physical game card or edition are you buying?
Before buying a physical release, check its package or official Nintendo Store/eShop listing for the card format and, for a game-key card, the required download space. Nintendo’s game-card instructions also cover compatible original Switch cards and Switch 2 Edition releases. Compatibility for some original Switch games can vary because Switch 2 uses different hardware.
A Switch 2 Edition adds features to original Switch software. Nintendo says the in-store Switch 2 Edition and its purchased upgrade pack contain the same content. Game-key cards should also be kept away from magnets or magnetic objects for long periods; Nintendo warns that exposure can affect internal components and cause malfunction.

System version requirements
Nintendo’s system update history says version 20.1.0 is required to use game-key cards and microSD Express. Version 20.1.1 was released on June 4, 2025, and included initial system features. System software changes over time, so check the console’s System Update screen for the current version and install available updates.
