For most Xbox players, “cloud data” means game saves. To access one, connect the console to the internet, sign in with the same Microsoft/Xbox account used when the save was created, and launch the game. Xbox generally syncs saves automatically; they aren’t presented as files you can browse or download. If you mean documents or photos in OneDrive, use Microsoft Edge on Xbox or the OneDrive app if it’s available for your console.
First, identify the data you’re looking for
- Game saves and progress: Launch the game while online and signed in to the account that played it. Xbox cloud saves are managed through the game, not a file browser. See Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Game Saves FAQ.
- Documents and photos: These may be in OneDrive, which is separate from Xbox game saves. Open Edge and go to OneDrive on the web, or use the OneDrive app if it’s listed for your console.
- Screenshots and clips: Check the Xbox captures area or Xbox mobile app. Availability depends on where a capture was stored, whether it synced, and applicable retention rules; captures aren’t automatically the same thing as OneDrive files.
- Cloud Gaming progress: Cloud Gaming streams supported games; it isn’t a browsable personal storage area. Progress availability depends on the game and its account or save support.
- Profile, achievements, friends, and purchases: These are associated with your Microsoft/Xbox account and normally appear when you sign in to that same account. They aren’t ordinary files to copy.
Access a cloud game save
- Connect the Xbox to the internet and confirm it can connect to Xbox network.
- Sign in to the same Microsoft/Xbox account used on the original console. If multiple accounts have similar names, check the active profile rather than relying on the gamertag alone.
- Install or launch the game. Keep it open and let any synchronization message finish before playing or closing it.
- If the game asks which save to use, compare the dates or visible progress if available. Select the copy containing the progress you want to keep. Choosing one version can replace the other, so don’t guess if you’re unsure.
On another Xbox, the save usually becomes available when you launch the compatible game online under the same account. If you’ve reinstalled a game, start it online and allow it to check for a save. There is no universal manual “force sync” button for every title; synchronization is generally automatic.
Use OneDrive on Xbox
OneDrive stores files separately from Xbox game saves. Microsoft says OneDrive can be accessed through a web browser; its app and features can vary by platform. See Microsoft’s OneDrive app guide for current platform information.

- Go to OneDrive on the web and sign in with the Microsoft account that contains the files.
- Browse or preview files. Downloading, sharing, or other actions depend on the website and browser’s support.
If you prefer an app, search for OneDrive in the Microsoft Store on your console. Install or open the official app if it is available. Don’t assume every Xbox model or region has the same app experience; Edge is the fallback. Personal and work or school OneDrive accounts are separate, so use the account where the file is stored. Manage a save carefully
If you’re troubleshooting a save, the common menu route is My games & apps → See all → Games → select the game → Menu button → Manage game and add-ons → Saved data. Labels and layout may vary with the dashboard version.
- Delete from console removes the local copy for that profile while leaving the cloud copy available to sync later, if one exists.
- Delete everywhere removes the save from the console and cloud locations. Treat this as destructive: don’t select it to fix a sync problem unless you are certain you want to remove the save.
- Delete for all accounts, if shown, may affect saves for more than one profile.
If you don’t know which version is correct, don’t delete anything yet. In particular, don’t use “Delete everywhere” as a way to make the console fetch a cloud save.

If the cloud save is missing or wrong
- Check the active account. Make sure it’s the same account used on the original console. Personal Microsoft accounts cannot be merged, and game progress can’t be transferred between them; see Microsoft’s account-combination guidance.
- Check the connection. Confirm the console is online and connected to Xbox network. A service outage or weak connection can delay synchronization.
- Launch the game and wait. Start it online and let any sync complete. Don’t cancel a sync just because it takes a while; if the console appears frozen, troubleshoot before choosing a save or deleting data.
- Quit and relaunch. Open the guide, highlight the game, press the Menu button, choose Quit, then start it again.
- Restart the console. Use the normal restart option, reconnect to the network, and reopen the game.
- Check the game’s own account system. Some games keep progression on a publisher’s servers or require a linked publisher account. Confirm the right account is linked and that the game supports the platform or cross-progression you’re using.
- Preserve copies if there’s a conflict. Stop playing the game on other consoles, note which one has the newest progress, get that console online, let the game save and close normally, then restart the target console and inspect the prompt. If neither version is right, contact Xbox Support or the game publisher before deleting anything.
A save available on one console but not another can also point to a different game edition, an outdated installation, or a title that does not support the relevant cross-generation or cross-platform transfer. Disc versus digital ownership does not by itself determine which profile owns a save, but the installed version still needs to be compatible.
What to expect across Xbox, PC, and offline play
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves can sync when the account, game, and versions support it. That does not guarantee every title shares progress across generations, PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Cross-progression depends on the game, edition, platform, and sometimes a publisher account. Check the game’s own support information if an Xbox save does not appear on PC or in a cloud-gaming session.

While offline, a save already stored locally may still be playable, depending on the game and the console’s offline-use permissions. A cloud-only or not-yet-synced save cannot be retrieved until the console reconnects. Games that rely on publisher servers may also require their service to be online.
Uninstalling a game and deleting saved data are different actions, but don’t assume every save is safely synced before removing local data. Game Pass access is also separate from save storage: losing access to a game does not necessarily mean the save is gone, but using it again requires access to a compatible game and the account that owns the progress.

If OneDrive won’t open
- Check that Edge or the app is signed in to the account containing the file.
- Sign out and back in, or try a private browser window.
- Check whether the file belongs to a work or school OneDrive rather than a personal one, and whether that account still has access.
- If the site requires editing, uploading, or authentication that’s difficult with a controller, use a phone or computer instead.
- If the app is missing from the Store, use the browser rather than assuming your console supports the current app version.
