On most recent Samsung TVs, open Settings → All Settings → Connection → Game Mode Settings → Game Mode, then choose On, Off, or Auto. A connected PS5 or Xbox can often trigger Auto Game Mode; a Windows PC may require manual activation. If 4K, HDR, 120 Hz, or VRR is missing, check Input Signal Plus for the HDMI port in use.
Menu names vary by model year, region, and software. Turn on the console or PC and select its HDMI input before opening the menu, because some sets show gaming controls only for an active external device.
What Samsung Game Mode changes
Game Mode reduces or bypasses some picture-processing steps so the TV can respond faster to controller or mouse input. Samsung describes it as a latency-focused mode, but warns that graphics quality can decline slightly when it is enabled. It is not a resolution upgrade and cannot create 4K, HDR, 120 Hz, or VRR support that the TV, HDMI port, cable, source, or game does not provide.
Use it for interactive games when responsiveness matters. Turn it off for films or television if you prefer motion processing, noise reduction, or other normal picture controls.

- Select the HDMI input used by that device.
- Press Home or Settings on the remote.
- Choose Settings, then All Settings if that option appears.
- Open Connection → Game Mode Settings → Game Mode.
- Select On.
Samsung documents this route in its Game Bar instructions and regional support pages.
Older models
- Open Settings → General → External Device Manager.
- Select Game Mode Settings or Game Mode.
- Choose On.
Some sets instead use Picture → Expert Settings → Game Mode. If neither route exists, check the model’s e-manual; Samsung menus differ by software and model.
Quick Settings shortcut
On supported models, press the remote’s Settings, 123, or Colors button, open Quick Settings, highlight Game Mode, and select On. Samsung’s Canadian support page documents this shortcut for PC connections: Samsung Game Mode instructions.

Turn Game Mode off
Use the same menu and select Off:
Settings → All Settings → Connection → Game Mode Settings → Game Mode → Off
On older sets, use Settings → General → External Device Manager → Game Mode Settings → Game Mode → Off. If the TV switches back immediately, it may be set to Auto or receiving an ALLM request from the console.
On, Off, or Auto: which should you choose?
| Setting | What it does | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| On | Keeps gaming processing active for the selected input. | Dedicated gaming HDMI input; usually the practical choice for a PC. |
| Off | Restores normal picture processing and can increase latency. | Movies, streaming, or when you prefer the TV’s non-gaming picture controls. |
| Auto | Allows a compatible source to request low-latency mode. | PS5 or Xbox users who want gaming mode during play without forcing it for every activity. |
Supported consoles can signal the TV automatically, while Samsung says PC connections may need manual activation. Behavior depends on the TV, source, HDMI connection, and ALLM support.
PS5 setup
- Connect the PS5 directly to a compatible HDMI port on the TV when possible.
- Select that input and set Samsung Game Mode to Auto or On.
- If HDR or high-bandwidth video is unavailable, open Input Signal Plus for that HDMI port.
- On the PS5, open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output and review Resolution, 120 Hz Output, VRR, ALLM, and HDR.
Samsung’s PS5 guide explains the HDMI setting at https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10005264/. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide notes that ALLM can switch a compatible TV into low-latency mode. Disabling ALLM completely may require disabling VRR, because VRR can continue to request low latency.

Game Mode alone does not enable 4K/120 Hz. The TV, port, cable, PS5 output, and game must all support the signal.
Xbox setup
- Connect the Xbox to the appropriate HDMI input and select it on the TV.
- Set Game Mode to Auto or On.
- Enable Input Signal Plus for that port if 4K, HDR, or enhanced bandwidth is unavailable.
- On Xbox, open Profile & system → Settings → General → TV & display options.
- Choose the supported resolution and refresh rate, then inspect the advanced video checks for 4K, HDR, VRR, and 120 Hz.
On some older Samsung TVs, Input Signal Plus is called HDMI UHD Color. Samsung’s Xbox instructions are at https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10006955/. Available Xbox checkboxes depend on the console and TV; a missing option is not automatically a Game Mode fault.
PC setup
- Connect the gaming PC to the TV by HDMI and select that input.
- Open the Samsung gaming menu and choose On if Game Mode has not activated.
- Enable Input Signal Plus for that port when higher-bandwidth output is required.
- In Windows or your GPU control panel, select the TV’s supported resolution and refresh rate.
- Verify HDR, VRR, and the intended chroma format.
A PC may be identified as a computer source, changing available picture controls. 4K at 120 Hz requires a compatible TV, HDMI port, GPU, cable, and display mode. If text appears soft, check resolution, scaling, and chroma before blaming Game Mode. Samsung’s PC guidance is at https://www.samsung.com/ca/support/tv-audio-video/use-game-mode-on-your-samsung-smart-tv/.
Input Signal Plus and HDMI bandwidth
Input Signal Plus expands the HDMI signal range on supported sets and can unlock higher-bandwidth formats. A typical path is Settings → General or Connection → External Device Manager → Input Signal Plus, followed by selecting the relevant HDMI port. Samsung’s general explanation is at https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003978/.

Enable it per port when needed; do not switch it on blindly for every device. If it causes flicker, black screens, or handshake failures, turn it off for that port and test another cable, input, or output mode.
Open Samsung Game Bar
On supported TVs, enable Game Mode and press and hold the remote’s Play/Pause button. Game Bar may show input-lag status, FPS, HDR, VRR, picture mode, sound output, and Game Mode controls. Some 2023–2024 models add features such as minimap tools, virtual aim points, or ultrawide PC views; availability is model-specific, not universal. See Samsung’s Game Bar feature list.

Game Mode is missing
- Select the correct HDMI input and turn on the source device.
- Check Connection → Game Mode Settings and General → External Device Manager.
- On older sets, check Picture → Expert Settings.
- Connect the source directly to the TV, update TV software, and consult the model e-manual.
Game Mode keeps activating
Auto mode, console ALLM, per-input settings, or HDMI-CEC can cause this. Choose Off for manual control, disable ALLM on the console, and review PS5 VRR settings because VRR can still trigger low-latency behavior. Check device-link settings if the TV is also changing sources or powering devices.
4K, HDR, 120 Hz, or VRR is unavailable
- Confirm the TV and HDMI port support the feature.
- Enable Input Signal Plus for that port.
- Use a cable with the required bandwidth.
- Check the source output and game support.
- Temporarily bypass a soundbar, receiver, switch, splitter, or capture device.
The screen flickers or goes black
- Turn off Input Signal Plus on the affected port.
- Temporarily reduce output to 4K/60 Hz or 1080p/60 Hz.
- Disable VRR, try the console’s included or another certified high-speed cable, and connect directly to the TV.
- Try another HDMI port, restart both devices, then re-enable features one at a time.
The picture looks worse
Reduced processing can change image quality. Adjust Game Picture Mode, use Auto when a console also handles streaming, or turn Game Mode off for films. Game Motion Plus may improve motion at the cost of latency, so use it only if that trade-off suits you.

Choosing a setting quickly
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| PS5 or Xbox mainly for games | Auto or On |
| Gaming PC | On if automatic activation does not occur |
| Console also used for streaming | Auto, where supported |
| Lowest latency | On with the TV’s fastest gaming option |
| Best movie processing | Off |
| Missing enhanced HDMI features | Check Input Signal Plus, ports, cable, and source settings |
Model and regional limitations
Samsung changes labels and menu locations across model years, regions, and firmware. The Canadian, U.S., and Australian support pages therefore show different paths. Identify the exact model number and use its current e-manual if the routes above do not match. A missing Game Mode menu does not by itself prove that the television lacks gaming support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Samsung TV automatically switch to Game Mode?
Auto Game Mode or a console’s ALLM signal is requesting low-latency mode. Select Off and disable ALLM if you want manual control.
Does Game Mode improve FPS?
No. It reduces TV processing and input delay; it does not increase the console or PC’s frame rate.
Should I connect my console to the TV or soundbar?
Connect directly to the TV while troubleshooting. A soundbar or receiver may not pass 4K/120 Hz, HDR, VRR, or ALLM.
