To put a countdown between stories in a 24/7 YouTube stream, make it a separate scene in OBS Studio, then switch to that scene between story scenes. Use a non-looping countdown video as a Media Source for a predictable interstitial, or a Browser Source if you want to display a web-based timer. YouTube’s Premiere countdown is for the start of a scheduled Premiere, not a documented way to insert breaks into a live stream.
Build a countdown scene in OBS
This method gives you control over when the countdown appears in the story sequence. OBS supports video-file Media Sources, embedded Browser Sources, and scene transitions. See the OBS Media Sources guide, OBS Browser Source guide, and OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Create or identify your story scenes. In OBS, set up a separate scene for each story you plan to show. Create another scene and name it “Countdown” or something equally clear.
- Add a countdown video, if you have one. Open the Countdown scene, add a Media Source, and point it to the countdown video file. Leave Loop off and enable restart when the source becomes active so it begins at the start each time you switch to the scene. Choose the end behavior you want; a clip with a clean final frame is easiest to control.
- Or add a web-based timer. Add a Browser Source to the Countdown scene and load a local HTML page or a countdown page URL. Set its viewport to fit your stream canvas. Test the page before broadcasting to make sure it loads and displays correctly.
- Arrange your sequence. When one story ends, switch to Countdown, then switch to the next story scene. Use OBS’s scene-switch controls to manage the order. OBS includes Cut and Fade transitions; the transition controls determine how one scene gives way to the next.
- Rehearse the complete sequence. Test in a private or unlisted stream before using the setup in a public continuous broadcast. Check that the countdown starts from the beginning each time, story video and audio stop and resume where intended, and no unintended browser or desktop audio reaches the stream.
Choose a countdown source
| Option | Best for | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | A countdown clip with a fixed duration and design. | Turn Loop off and enable restart on activation for repeatable playback. A clean end frame makes the scene easier to manage. |
| OBS Browser Source | A timer or design you want to adjust without making a new video file. | It embeds a local page or URL. Set its viewport to the stream canvas and verify the page before going live. |
Connect OBS to YouTube safely
For encoder-based streaming, YouTube directs creators to connect using the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in a screen recording, overlay, or other public material. See YouTube’s encoder streaming help and live stream settings guide.
YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours, but that does not establish uninterrupted reliability for streams lasting longer than that. YouTube also warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, so do not promise viewers they can always pause or rewind to any earlier moment in a 24/7 broadcast. See the YouTube DVR guidance.

Premiere countdowns and hosted 24/7 streams are different
Use a YouTube Premiere countdown for a scheduled opening
YouTube says a Premiere countdown starts at the scheduled beginning of a Premiere, before the uploaded video plays, and is not included in the resulting regular upload. Its documentation does not describe the feature as a repeatable countdown between stories in an already-running 24/7 stream. See YouTube’s Premiere help.
Check hosted-stream features before relying on an interstitial
YouTube’s encoder help lists hosted services for continuously streaming prerecorded video, including Gyre. The cited help does not establish whether a hosted service can insert a countdown between each story, so confirm that feature with the provider before choosing a hosted workflow.

Troubleshoot common countdown problems
- The countdown resumes partway through. For a Media Source, confirm that restart on activation is enabled and Loop is off. Switch away and back during a rehearsal to verify that the clip restarts.
- The countdown repeats instead of ending. Check that Loop is disabled on the Media Source. If it is a Browser Source, check the timer page’s own behavior; OBS embeds the page, but the page controls its timer.
- The countdown scene appears blank. For a Browser Source, check the page URL or local file and confirm it loads, then verify the viewport size and source visibility. For a Media Source, confirm that the selected file is available to OBS.
- Unexpected audio plays during the break. Check the audio from the countdown source and any browser or desktop audio sources. Rehearse the transition to confirm only the intended sound reaches the stream.
- The next story begins too early or too late. Switch scenes deliberately during the rehearsal and check the clip’s duration and ending behavior. A countdown scene does not automatically determine when you switch to the next story unless you set up that behavior separately.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want prerecorded stories to keep running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. The countdown-between-stories feature is not established here, so confirm that workflow before relying on it for interstitials.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream keeps going from the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
