How to Add a Countdown Between Videos in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the video loop in OBS, then add a separate countdown layer or clip—but do not assume OBS’s playlist loop will trigger that countdown between items automatically. OBS documents playlist looping and source layering; the transition itself needs a separate setup and a full rehearsal. For 4K at 60 fps, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps as a typical video bitrate, with a 10–40 Mbps range.

What you need to make the countdown appear between videos

  • OBS Studio, with VLC installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist.
  • Local video files in the order you want them to play.
  • A countdown made as a rendered video clip or as a text-and-graphic composition.
  • A YouTube encoder stream, created or scheduled in YouTube Studio, plus its stream URL and stream key.
  • A stable upload connection with capacity for the stream bitrate and additional headroom.

The key limitation is the transition: OBS’s documented VLC playlist feature can loop a playlist, and OBS can layer sources, but the cited documentation does not describe an automatic countdown trigger after each playlist item. Treat countdown timing and insertion as a separate production step and verify it in a long rehearsal before leaving the broadcast unattended. (OBS Media Sources; OBS Sources Guide)

Prepare the videos and countdown

Choose how to make the countdown

A rendered countdown clip is easy to preview as a media source, but the official OBS guidance cited here does not establish how to insert it automatically between each item in a VLC playlist. A text or graphic countdown gives you control over its appearance as a scene layer, but it still needs a reliable way to show and hide it at the right times.

Set the duration and check the content

Decide how long the gap should be and whether viewers should hear silence, music, or other audio during it. Check that the videos and any music or other material are cleared for your intended use. A live stream is not exempt from copyright rules simply because its video is prerecorded; review YouTube’s applicable policies before broadcasting.

Build the looping scene in OBS

  1. Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video source appears only when VLC is installed.
  2. Add the playlist. In your scene, add a VLC Video source and select the video files in playback order.
  3. Enable looping. Turn on Loop Playlist in the source’s settings. For a single file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source has a Loop option.
  4. Add the countdown layer. Add a media source for a rendered countdown clip or text and graphic sources for a composed timer. In the Sources list, place the countdown above the video source; OBS displays higher sources above lower ones.
  5. Set up the transition separately. Decide how the countdown will become visible after each item and disappear before the next one. The cited OBS documentation does not specify an automatic playlist-item trigger or countdown-to-scene switch, so configure a method you can operate or validate and test it rather than assuming the playlist handles it.

OBS’s source behavior and layering controls are documented in its Media Sources and Sources Guide pages, both dated 2022-01-11.

Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event

  1. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream that uses an encoder.
  2. Copy the connection details. In the event’s stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key.
  3. Enter them in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key; if you use a custom server configuration, use the stream URL and key provided by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the stream URL and key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  4. Preview before going live. Start the encoder and inspect the incoming feed in Live Control Room before starting the public event. Confirm the countdown is legible and appears at the intended transitions.

YouTube recommends arranging encoder streams at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes early. Those lead times give you room to check the incoming feed and resolve setup problems; they do not guarantee a successful broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Set OBS for 4K at 60 fps

YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance lists 10–40 Mbps for 2160p at 60 fps and 35 Mbps as typical. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive 4K playback: YouTube transcodes live streams for different devices and network conditions.

Setting Guidance for 2160p/60
Video bitrate 10–40 Mbps; 35 Mbps typical, according to YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate), as recommended by YouTube.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
Latency Normal latency: YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K.
Upload headroom YouTube recommends available upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate. At 35 Mbps video with no additional bitrate streams, that works out to at least 42 Mbps available upload capacity (35 × 1.2); this is arithmetic from YouTube’s guidance, not a separate YouTube-published threshold.

Use the settings available in your OBS output configuration, and check YouTube’s encoder settings page for the current resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, and codec guidance. The 35 Mbps typical recommendation is for video; include any additional stream bitrate when accounting for total capacity.

Rehearse the full loop before relying on it

Run the broadcast through every clip, every countdown, and at least one complete playlist repeat. Check the transition itself, not just whether each source works on its own.

  • Timing: Does each countdown start at the intended boundary, last for the planned duration, and finish before the next clip begins?
  • Visibility: Is the countdown above the video, positioned safely within the frame, and readable at 4K?
  • Audio: Does sound continue, fade, or stop as intended during each gap? Listen at every transition for abrupt cuts or overlapping audio.
  • Order and repeat: Do clips play in the right sequence, and does the playlist restart as expected after its last item?
  • Stream health: Does YouTube receive a stable feed, and does the Live Control Room preview match the OBS output?
  • Long-run behavior: Leave the rehearsal running long enough to reveal missed transitions, unexpected source behavior, or network instability.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend monitoring stream health and maintaining upload headroom above the total bitrate.

Troubleshoot common countdown and 4K loop problems

The VLC Video source is missing

OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. Install VLC, then check OBS’s source menu again.

The playlist loops but the countdown never appears

Playlist looping and countdown triggering are separate behaviors in the documentation cited here. Check how your chosen transition method detects the end of each item, and test every boundary. Do not treat Loop Playlist as proof that OBS will insert a countdown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The countdown is hidden behind the video

Move its source above the video in the Sources list. OBS layers higher sources over lower ones.

The 4K stream is unstable

Compare the configured bitrate with the available upload capacity, allowing YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate. Check YouTube’s stream-health display, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and rehearse at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use.

The stream does not use low latency

That is expected for 4K: YouTube’s encoder guidance says its low-latency option is unavailable at that resolution. The 4K stream uses normal latency.

The YouTube preview does not match the planned event

Confirm that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the correct event, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before starting the event. Avoid sharing the stream key; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OBS automatically insert a countdown after every video in a VLC playlist?

The cited OBS documentation explains playlist looping and source layering, but not automatic countdown triggering at each playlist-item boundary. Verify the transition method you choose in rehearsal.

Can a 4K YouTube Live stream use low latency?

No. YouTube’s encoder guidance says low latency is unavailable for 4K, so 4K streams use normal latency.
