Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Add the countdown in your stream production, not in YouTube’s broadcast settings. In OBS, create a separate interstitial scene with a timer, switch to it between videos, then return to the next video when the countdown ends. YouTube Live Control Room manages the broadcast, but its documented settings do not provide a feature for inserting a countdown between playlist videos.
Build the countdown in OBS
- Create an interstitial scene. In OBS, add a new scene for the gap, such as “Next match in…”. Give it a gaming-appropriate background. Keep the video or gameplay scene separate so the interstitial fully covers the previous video.
- Add a countdown source. Use a live timer source, a browser source that displays a timer, or a pre-rendered countdown clip. A plain static text source will not count down by itself; it needs a timer mechanism or you can use a clip with the countdown already rendered.
- Set the transition sequence. The intended order is video ends, countdown scene appears, then the next video begins. For a manually operated rerun, switch to the countdown scene and then back to the video scene yourself. If you want this automated, choose a scene or source automation method that matches how your playlist is built and rehearse it; the available documentation does not establish a universal end-of-file automation setup.
- Rehearse the gaps. Test privately or unlisted. Confirm the timer resets for every gap, decide whether audio should be muted or intentionally continue, and verify that the next video starts at the right point. These checks matter especially if the timer is a clip or the scene changes are automated.
- Start the broadcast normally. Use OBS as your encoder and YouTube Live Control Room for the usual stream setup. YouTube’s Gaming stream type is a broadcast setting, not a tool for adding a visible interstitial.
Choose the right countdown approach
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual scene switching | A rerun where a person can watch the transitions | Simple and controlled, but someone must switch scenes at each gap. |
| Automated scene or source changes | A playlist intended to run without manual switching | Can reduce hands-on work, but must be matched to the playlist and tested; no particular end-of-file configuration is established by the cited guidance. |
| Live timer source | Gaps whose duration may change | Can be adjustable, but requires a source that actually updates the timer. |
| Pre-rendered countdown clip | A fixed-duration, predictable intermission | Playback is straightforward, but the clip’s duration is fixed unless you replace or edit it. |
| Dedicated interstitial scene | A clear break between videos | Provides full control over what viewers see during the gap. |
| Overlay on the video scene | A countdown that should leave the current scene visible | Preserves the scene beneath it, but does not fully cover the previous video. |
What the OBS delay countdown does—and does not do
The OBS Comp Delay project documents a text-source token, %delay_countdown%, that displays remaining seconds while a delay transition scene is active. Its stated purpose is to fill a stream-delay buffer. It is not documented as detecting when a rerun video ends or automatically inserting a playlist gap. You can review the project documentation at OBS Comp Delay, but do not treat it as a drop-in countdown scheduler for videos.
An older OBS Project Forums response about scheduled media playback recommends starting with an intro scene and then switching to the video scene. That is a useful basic scene-transition idea, not definitive current instructions for automating every playlist: the community thread.
Why YouTube delay settings are not a visible countdown
A countdown graphic is part of the produced video picture: OBS puts it in the scene viewers see. Stream latency and added broadcast delay affect delivery timing; they do not create an interstitial graphic. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers stream setup, including the Gaming stream type, but does not describe a between-video countdown feature.

YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, which uses video segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. That is a delivery distinction, not a way to build or schedule a countdown: Set up an HLS stream. For general OBS-to-YouTube setup, see the OBS Project Forums guide; its first publication was in 2015 and it has since been updated.
Troubleshoot common countdown problems
- The text never changes: A static text source only displays fixed text. Use a source with a live timer or switch to a pre-rendered countdown clip.
- The next video starts while the countdown is still showing: Check the clip duration or the automation timing, and rehearse the transition with the actual playlist. The cited sources do not confirm a universal end-of-file trigger.
- The old video remains visible behind the timer: Put the countdown in a dedicated scene rather than layering it over the video scene.
- The timer does not reset for the next gap: Check how your timer source or clip is started and restarted, then test consecutive gaps before going live.
- Audio continues unexpectedly: Decide whether the interstitial should be silent or carry audio, then configure and test the sources and scene transition accordingly.
- You changed latency but still see no countdown: Latency changes delivery timing. Add a visible timer source or clip to the OBS production instead.
