In OBS, loop your recorded study footage in a Media Source, then place a countdown above it using a Browser source or a prerecorded countdown clip. Test the complete study-to-break-to-study cycle before leaving the stream unattended: OBS supports the building blocks, but its documented source guide does not describe a built-in countdown timer.
Build the looping study scene in OBS
- Create or select the scene. Choose the OBS scene that will carry your recorded study footage.
- Add the study recording. In Sources, add a Media Source and select the local video file. Open its properties and enable Loop so it starts again when playback finishes. OBS documentation lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among supported formats. OBS Media Sources
- Add a timer layer. Add a Browser source for a webpage-based timer, or add a second Media Source for a countdown clip rendered in advance. A Text source works for a fixed label, but OBS’s source documentation does not describe a native decrementing countdown procedure. OBS Sources Guide
- Layer and place it. Move the timer above the footage in the Sources list, then resize and position it with the preview transform controls. Sources higher in the list appear over lower sources. Check that it remains readable against both bright and dark footage and does not obscure important content. OBS Sources Guide
- Check the full cycle. Preview playback through the end of a study period, the break, and the return to study footage. Verify the countdown resets at the intended point, source visibility behaves as expected, and audio is correct. These are checks to perform on your setup, not a claim that every timer page or scene configuration behaves identically.
Choose the timer method that matches the cycle

If the stream should rotate among several recordings rather than repeat one file, OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist with Loop Playlist enabled. VLC must be installed, and its bitness must match OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
When YouTube’s Take a Break overlay is useful
YouTube Live Control Room offers a Take a Break overlay that can be added to an encoder as a Browser source. It is an operator-controlled away slate, not a persistent countdown baked into the recorded scene. To use it, copy the overlay URL from the break overlay settings, paste it into a new Browser source, set the source dimensions to match the stream resolution, and enable Shutdown source when not visible. The operator must return to Live Control Room and hide the slate to resume. The overlay also does not mute other stream audio sources. Mute a microphone separately before stepping away, and if the slate includes video audio, confirm that it is routed into the stream. YouTube Help: Take a Break
