To put chat or recent-event notifications over your gameplay in Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Game Overlay, enable the in-game overlay, and select Show Chat, Show Recent Events, or both. What Streamlabs Desktop’s Game Overlay does
Game Overlay is a built-in in-game display for your own chat and recent events, such as follows or subscriptions. It is useful when you play on one monitor and want to check activity without switching away from the game. It is not a decorative scene overlay: scene overlays are graphics added to the broadcast layout, while Game Overlay places monitoring panels over your gameplay for you.
Streamlabs’ 2022 article reported that 64% of live streamers on Twitch used a single monitor, attributing the figure to its own research. The article does not explain the dataset or methodology, so treat that number as vendor-reported rather than an independently verified estimate. Streamlabs’ article was last updated October 2, 2025.
Set up the Game Overlay
- Open the setting: In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings and select Game Overlay.
- Choose what to display: Enable the in-game overlay and select Show Chat, Show Recent Events, or both.
- Position the panels: Turn on positioning mode, then drag the components to a convenient area of the game window. Adjust opacity so text remains legible without covering important gameplay.
- Assign hotkeys: Open Settings > Hotkeys and assign keys to Toggle in-game overlay and Toggle overlay positioning mode. Streamlabs says hotkeys are required to toggle the overlay and enter or leave positioning mode.
- Change the game’s display mode: Run the game in borderless-windowed or windowed-fullscreen mode. Streamlabs says fullscreen mode will not work with this feature; its 2022 article says borderless window mode works best.
Menu labels and layout may vary by app version. If you do not see the documented options, check the current in-app settings or consult Streamlabs support rather than assuming another setting has the same effect.

Will viewers see the overlay?
That depends on your gameplay capture source, according to Streamlabs:

When to use another way to monitor chat
The in-game overlay is intended to keep chat and recent events visible during play, especially on a single-monitor setup. Streamlabs also suggests using a phone or tablet to monitor chat as an alternative. That does not require buying hardware if you already have a suitable device, but checking tips, follows, and subscriptions on another screen can still interrupt your play. The Game Overlay setup itself calls for no additional hardware.
Streamlabs called Game Overlay experimental in its 2022 article. Its current gaming page still lists the feature, but the reviewed instructions do not provide a current compatibility matrix or explicitly update that experimental status. Do not assume it works with every game, system, or capture configuration. Streamlabs’ gaming page lists Game Overlay among its tools.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The overlay does not appear in the game: Confirm that the in-game overlay is enabled in Settings > Game Overlay, and that your hotkey is assigned. Check that the game is running borderless-windowed or windowed-fullscreen rather than fullscreen.
- You cannot move the panels: Assign and use the hotkey for Toggle overlay positioning mode. Streamlabs identifies hotkeys as necessary for entering and leaving positioning mode.
- Viewers can see chat or event panels: Streamlabs says Display Capture includes the Game Overlay. Use Game Capture for private monitoring, then verify the broadcast output before streaming.
- The settings or labels do not match: App layouts may change, and the cited guides do not provide a version-by-version comparison. Check the current settings or Streamlabs support rather than relying on an assumed menu path.
- It still does not work in a particular game: Streamlabs’ reviewed instructions do not establish universal game or system compatibility. Try the supported display modes and consult Streamlabs support for the specific configuration.
