In OBS, prepare a scene for each prerecorded service and one for the slide, then transition between scenes while keeping the stream running. Viewers see the slide between services without the livestream ending.
What a holding slide does—and what it is not
A holding slide is part of the continuous live feed sent by your encoder. In this workflow, OBS sends the feed to YouTube, and changing OBS scenes changes what viewers see without stopping the event.
YouTube’s scheduled-event trailer is different: it plays before a scheduled livestream begins, not between two services during an active stream. Use an encoder scene for an in-stream pause.
What you need before you start
- A scheduled or otherwise selected YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can remain on and connected to the internet for the broadcast.
- The prerecorded service videos and a holding-slide image or other slide source prepared on that computer.
- The event’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the event.
YouTube supports encoder streaming for advanced productions and accepts a feed from streaming software or hardware. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge; a dedicated hardware encoder is not required for this basic scene-switching workflow.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up the event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the scheduled live event. Open the event’s stream settings and locate its stream URL and stream key. Use the destination and key for this event.
- In OBS, connect to the event. Enter the YouTube stream destination and key using the streaming settings available in your installed OBS version. The URL and key direct the encoder’s feed to the correct event. Do not share screenshots or documents that expose the key.
- Start the encoder feed in good time. Confirm that YouTube Studio receives the stream before the service begins. Leave OBS sending the feed as you move between scenes; do not stop the stream to show the slide.
Prepare a scene for each service and the slide
- Create a scene for the first prerecorded service. Add the service video using the media-source controls in your installed OBS version, then check the picture and sound.
- Create a separate holding-slide scene. Add the slide image or other graphic as a source and make sure it fits the output canvas. The reviewed OBS and YouTube guidance establishes scene switching, but does not specify exact image-source setup or a still-image duration control; those details can vary by OBS version and source configuration.
- Create a scene for the next prerecorded service. Add its video source and verify its picture and sound as well. Keep service scenes separate so the operator can identify and prepare the next segment clearly.
- Name scenes so a volunteer can recognize them quickly. For example, use “First service,” “Holding slide,” and “Second service.” Check that the intended sources are visible in each scene.
Switch scenes without ending the livestream
- Enable Studio Mode in OBS. Studio Mode separates the scene currently live from the scene you are preparing. OBS’s Overview Guide explains that this lets you change scenes in the background without viewers seeing those changes.
- Prepare the next scene in the edit/preview area. Select the holding-slide scene while the first service remains on the live side. Check the preview before taking it live.
- Choose a transition. OBS offers Fade and Cut at launch, and also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe as additional transitions. A Cut changes immediately; a Fade eases between scenes. Set the transition duration to suit the service handoff.
- Select Transition. This takes the prepared holding-slide scene live while OBS continues sending the stream. When the next service is ready, prepare its scene and select Transition again.
- Keep the encoder running for the entire changeover. The scene changes happen inside the ongoing feed. Do not end the YouTube event or stop OBS between services.
Rehearse the handoff before service
Run a private or unlisted rehearsal using the same event setup and scenes. Confirm that viewers would see the intended slide, that both prerecorded services have sound, and that the transition behaves as expected. This catches scene-selection and audio-routing mistakes before the public handoff.
- Check the stream preview in YouTube Studio before the planned start.
- Test the sequence from first service to slide to next service, including the operator’s scene selection and transition.
- Listen to the stream output, not only the local computer speakers, to confirm the prerecorded audio is present.
- Confirm the slide is legible at the stream’s output size and does not accidentally reveal desktop notifications or unrelated windows.
- Make sure the computer, OBS, and network remain available for the length of the broadcast.
Common problems and fixes
The slide does not appear to viewers
Check that the holding-slide scene is selected in the edit/preview area and that you pressed Transition. In Studio Mode, selecting a scene for editing alone does not make it live.

The stream ends or disconnects during the change
Scene transitions should happen while OBS continues sending the encoder feed. Check that you have not stopped streaming or ended the event, and verify that the computer and network remain connected.
A service is visible but has no sound
Check the video source and OBS audio routing for that service scene, then confirm the output in a rehearsal. Audio can differ between sources, so test each prerecorded service rather than assuming settings carry over.

The wrong scene appears
Use clear scene names and rehearse the full sequence. In Studio Mode, compare the live and preview areas before selecting Transition.
The event will not accept the encoder feed
Verify that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the selected YouTube event. Treat the key as a credential and avoid reusing a different event’s destination by mistake.

Optional shortcut control
A programmable controller such as Elgato Stream Deck can map buttons to shortcuts, but it is optional: OBS scene transitions do not require one. For a volunteer team, clear scene names and a rehearsal are more important than adding a controller.
