Add moderators through the YouTube app’s live-chat menu or YouTube Studio’s Community settings. Choose a standard moderator for routine chat work; reserve managing-moderator access for someone you trust to change chat settings and manage other standard moderators. For a 24/7 station, schedule human coverage and handoffs separately—YouTube does not prescribe a staffing ratio.
Choose the right moderator role
YouTube describes a moderator as “someone who you trust to help build a positive, safe channel experience for your community.” Give each person the least authority needed for the work.

Timeout choices include 10 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and 24 hours. Hiding a user makes their chat messages and comments invisible to other viewers; YouTube says the user is not notified.
Add a moderator in the YouTube app
- Open the station’s live stream and its live chat in the YouTube app.
- Find a message from the person you want to appoint and open the message menu.
- Select Add as standard moderator or Add as managing moderator, according to the permissions they need.
Add a moderator in YouTube Studio
- Open the YouTube Studio app and go to Settings → Community.
- Under the Automated Filters tab, enter the candidate’s channel URL in the Standard moderator or Managing moderators box.
- Save the settings. Ask the new moderator to open the stream’s live chat so they can moderate it.
Use the person’s channel identity or URL, not just a display name. Moderator status continues until you remove the person. Interface labels may change over time; YouTube’s current guidance is in Moderate live chat.

Plan coverage for a 24/7 station
Assigning a role does not create continuous human coverage. YouTube does not specify how many moderators a 24/7 station needs. Decide who is responsible for each coverage period, how shifts hand off, and who the channel owner should contact if a moderator is unavailable. Set expectations for when moderators should remove a message, use a timeout, hide a user, or escalate an issue.
Moderators need to open the live chat to act. YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players, so listeners using an embedded player may not have the same chat access.

Use chat controls to reduce repetitive work
- Hold potentially inappropriate messages for review: YouTube may hold messages identified by its systems. A moderator can show or hide them; if nobody acts, they remain hidden. YouTube cautions that “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat on your live stream.”
- Blocked words: Configure terms in YouTube Studio’s Community settings. Messages containing or closely matching them can be blocked.
- Slow mode: Set a wait interval between viewer messages in Live Control Room. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are not subject to the viewer limit.
- Participation modes: Options include subscriber-only and members-only chat. Use them only if they suit the station’s community goals.
These settings can help with recurring problems, but they do not replace trusted human attention when the channel needs active moderation. See YouTube’s live chat moderation settings for the available controls.
