In the current Steam desktop client, open Steam > Settings > Storage, click the + or Add Drive control, choose a drive or Let me choose another location, then select or create the library folder. The new location will appear in Storage and can be selected for future installations.
What a Steam library folder is
A Steam library folder is a location where Steam stores installed games and the steamapps data used to manage them. It is separate from the folder containing the Steam application, so you can add another library without reinstalling Steam.
On Windows, the default game location is commonly C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon. That common directory holds game content; the library root is the folder above steamapps, such as C:Program Files (x86)Steam or D:SteamLibrary. Valve documents the default path and alternate-drive workflow in its Steam storage support guide.
Add a new library folder in Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Click Steam in the upper-left corner and choose Settings.
- Open Storage.
- Click the + button or Add Drive control near the top. Button wording and layout can vary by client build and operating system.
- Choose the target drive. If Steam offers to create its standard library folder there, confirm it.
- For a specific directory, choose Let me choose another location.
- Select an existing suitable folder, or create a dedicated folder such as
D:SteamLibraryorE:GamesSteamLibrary. - Confirm with Add, Select Folder, or the equivalent button.
Success means the new drive or path is listed on the Storage page. The current interface uses Settings > Storage; older guides that say Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders describe a legacy interface. Valve introduced the newer storage-management interface in 2021 in its Steam client announcement.

Standard or custom location?
| Choice | When to use it | Practical advice |
|---|---|---|
| Steam-created location | A new or empty drive | Least confusing and easiest for Steam to manage. |
| Custom location | You need a particular folder or already have a library | Select the library root containing steamapps; do not choose steamappscommon or an individual game folder. |
Avoid nesting one library inside another. Steam may first require you to choose a drive and then select Let me choose another location for a custom path. Same-drive custom libraries can depend on the current Storage Manager build, so use that flow and accept the path only if Steam displays it as valid.
Make the new library the default
In Settings > Storage, select the new library and open its three-dot menu or equivalent context control. Choose Make Default if Steam displays that option. This changes the suggested destination for future installations; it does not move games that are already installed.

- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Install a new game there
- Start installing the game from your Library.
- Open the installation-location dropdown in the install dialog.
- Select the new Steam library.
- Continue the installation and check that the destination shown is the intended drive.
If it is missing, return to Settings > Storage, confirm the path is listed, restart Steam, and check that the drive is mounted and has enough free space.
Move an existing game to the new library
Create the destination library before moving anything. Steam’s supported move process updates its records as it transfers the files:

- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the drive containing the game.
- Select the game and click Move.
- Choose the new library and confirm.
Do not interrupt the transfer. Steam’s built-in Move command is preferable to dragging a game folder manually because it keeps the installation metadata consistent. Valve documents this workflow in the same storage guide.
Add an existing library without redownloading
This is useful after reinstalling Windows or Steam, reconnecting a drive, or moving a SteamLibrary folder. Steam can often reuse the files, but detection is not guaranteed if the folder structure or manifests are incomplete.

- Connect the drive and verify that the operating system can open it.
- Go to Steam > Settings > Storage and click + or Add Drive.
- Choose the drive, or select Let me choose another location.
- Select the folder that contains the library’s
steamappsdirectory, notsteamappscommonand not a game subfolder. - Confirm and wait for Steam to rescan it.
- If a game still appears uninstalled, start installing it to that same library. Steam may discover and validate the existing files, downloading only missing data.
- Run Verify integrity of game files if Steam reports an installation problem.
For the specific case where games appear uninstalled despite existing files, follow Valve’s recovery guidance at this support page. Keep the expected structure, including steamapps and its app-manifest files; adding only a parent directory is not enough if the files are arranged incorrectly.
Fix common problems
The plus button or Add Drive is missing
- Open Settings > Storage directly rather than Downloads.
- Maximize the Steam window; the control can be hidden in a crowded layout.
- Look for a drive dropdown or an Add Drive label instead of a visible plus sign.
- Restart Steam and install any pending client update.
Steam cannot create the folder
- Ensure the drive is mounted and has a stable drive letter (Windows) or mount point (macOS/Linux).
- Use a dedicated folder such as
D:SteamLibraryinstead of the drive root if the root is rejected. - Confirm your account can create and modify files there.
- Avoid treating a network share as a normal local library; permissions and availability are less reliable.
Steam says the folder must be empty
An empty folder is appropriate for a new library, but an existing library already contains steamapps. Select the library root, try adding the drive first and then the custom location, and do not delete existing data before making a backup. If Steam still cannot recognize it, use Valve’s uninstalled-games recovery steps.

The drive does not appear
- Check that the operating system has mounted it and assigned a drive letter or mount point.
- Reconnect external storage, try another cable or port, and start Steam only after the drive is available.
- Check free space and write permissions.
- External drives can disconnect, sleep, or receive a different drive letter, causing a library to disappear.
Steam created steamapps but did not recognize the library
- Quit Steam completely.
- Confirm the volume is mounted and the chosen directory is writable.
- Retry with a fresh dedicated folder.
- On Linux, check mount ownership and any Flatpak filesystem permissions.
- Back up existing games before moving or deleting anything.
A Valve-maintained Linux issue records a case where an empty steamapps folder was created without the library being registered; it is evidence of a possible client or permission failure, not universal Linux behavior: issue 9859.
Games remain listed as uninstalled
Confirm the library is visible in Storage and that the game’s app-manifest files remain in steamapps. Start an install to the same library so Steam can discover the files, then verify them. Do not delete steamapps or assume Steam Cloud covers every save.
Internal, external, and removable storage
| Location | Best use | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Frequently played games and fastest general access | Less portable; requires a compatible slot. |
| Internal HDD | Large libraries and infrequently played games | Slower loading and updates. |
| External SSD | Portable expansion or moving a library between computers | Can disconnect, sleep, or change drive letters. |
| External hard drive | Low-cost capacity or archival games | Slower and more vulnerable to sleep and connection problems. |
Valve warns against installing the Steam application itself on an external hard drive because of possible performance issues. That warning is distinct from storing game files on external storage, although frequently played games generally benefit from an internal SSD.
macOS, Linux, and SteamOS
The core route remains Steam settings > Storage > add location, but the folder picker and permissions differ. On macOS, select a mounted, writable volume. On Linux, use a consistently mounted directory such as one under /mnt, /media, or your home directory and ensure the Steam process can write to it; sandboxed packages may need additional access. On SteamOS, perform the setup in Desktop Mode and keep removable storage mounted before switching to Gaming Mode. Exact behavior depends on the operating system, mount method, package format, and Steam client build.
Saves, mods, and backups
- Moving a game directory does not necessarily move its save files.
- Steam Cloud is not universal; third-party games may store saves in Documents or another location outside the library.
- Mods, launchers, and configuration tools can keep data outside the game folder.
- Back up the library and important saves before a major migration.
- Do not delete the old location until the game launches and its saves and mods have been checked.
Advanced workaround (use only when the normal UI fails)
The community sometimes suggests opening the Steam console with steam://open/console and running library_folder_add "<path>". This is not Valve’s standard documented procedure, may depend on the client build, and should not replace Settings > Storage. See the community discussion for context: Steam Community thread.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- The library appears in Settings > Storage.
- The selected folder is the library root containing
steamapps. - The drive is mounted, writable, and has enough free space.
- Future installs use the intended destination.
- Moved or recovered games launch before the old files are removed.
