To show the current Gurbani track name, send changing metadata from your playout system to the stream server for audio-player displays; for text over an OBS video, read that metadata and show it through an OBS text source. These are separate outputs, so set up one or both according to where listeners should see the title. There is no special Gurbani metadata standard in the documented workflows below.
Choose where the track name should appear
- In a radio player or stream directory: the broadcaster or automation must send the current title and, if available, artist or performer fields to the streaming server. The player reads those fields from the stream.
- On the OBS video image: a plugin or other reader must get the current metadata and write formatted text for an OBS text source to display.
- In both places: configure both paths. An OBS overlay does not update the audio stream’s metadata, and a server metadata update does not automatically create text on the video.
In either setup, the source must provide a new title when the program or track changes. A one-time update or a static OBS text box will become stale during a continuous playlist.
Send now-playing metadata to an Icecast stream
1. Identify the server, mount, and metadata source
- Confirm with your streaming host whether the server is Icecast or SHOUTcast, and note the exact live mount used by the Gurbani stream.
- Check whether your playout or encoder application already sends artist and title updates when items change. If it does, play a known item and check the player or server status to confirm the displayed title changes.
- If the software does not send updates, check whether it has a built-in metadata update function or whether the host provides an authenticated metadata endpoint. The endpoint, mount name, and credentials are host-specific; do not assume an example URL from another provider applies to your stream.
Icecast documents a JSON statistics endpoint at /status-json.xsl for basic server statistics since version 2.4.0. The exact fields can depend on stream type and runtime. Use the JSON endpoint, raw XML, or a custom XSLT for status data; Icecast warns that its HTML statistics page is not a stable API and may change between versions. See the Icecast Server Statistics documentation.
2. Use the playout software or host-supported update method
If your encoder already sends usable metadata, prefer that automatic path. Otherwise, follow your provider’s documented authenticated update method. For example, SharpStream describes a mount-level HTTP metadata request that requires an active mount, valid credentials, URL-encoded metadata, and UTF-8 handling. Those details describe SharpStream’s endpoint, not a universal Icecast URL or authentication recipe; use your own host’s instructions. See SharpStream’s metadata endpoint guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep admin credentials private. Do not put them in browser-visible pages, OBS overlay code, or files accessible to viewers. If you enter a title manually, use the provider’s private control panel or supported tool rather than exposing an admin request.
3. Verify the change at the server and player
Update a test title and inspect the active mount’s status data or listen through a player that displays track information. Verify the title changes on a real track transition, not just immediately after a manual test update. Preserve the track, shabad, raagi, and transliteration labels provided by your trusted playlist or metadata source; the setup does not prescribe a Gurbani-specific field convention.

Put changing track text over an OBS video
1. Confirm that the playback source exposes metadata
The reader needs a source it can actually inspect: for example, metadata from the media player, Icecast status data, or output from the playout system. If that source does not expose current artist/title information, an OBS text source cannot discover it by itself.
2. Configure a metadata reader and text file
Use a supported plugin or other reader to format the current metadata and write it to a text file. Tuna’s documentation describes file outputs, formatting placeholders such as {artists} - {title}, and adding the output file as an OBS text source. Available fields depend on the selected metadata source, and updates stop if the reader or plugin stops. See the Tuna resource documentation.

- Configure the reader to use the player, server, or playout output that contains the current track information.
- Set its output format and file location, then confirm that the file changes when the track changes.
- In OBS, add a text source that reads that file. Choose the file-based text option, browse to the generated file, and place and style the source in the scene.
- Preview a track transition in OBS and verify that the new text appears. Keep the plugin running while the scene is in use.
When metadata is missing, a neutral label such as “Live Gurbani stream” is safer than a guessed track name. Do not treat audio recognition as authoritative attribution unless you verify the result.
Choose the metadata route that fits your stream
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic playout or encoder updates | Unattended playlists with reliable per-track metadata | Depends on the application and encoder sending accurate changes. |
| Manual server update | A stream operator who changes titles at program transitions | Requires an operator for each change; missed updates leave stale titles. SoundCast, for example, documents a Now Playing field for sending artist and title to Icecast. See its user manual. |
| Tags carried in the audio stream | Formats and readers that expose embedded tags | Compatibility varies. What’s Now Playing says it can read tags in Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Opus; for MP3 and other formats, its reader needs metadata sent separately. See its Icecast input guidance. |
| Separate authenticated server update | Playout setups without a usable automatic metadata path | Requires the correct active mount, host-supported endpoint, and private credentials. |
| OBS text overlay | Showing a changing title on the video image | Requires a reader that can access the metadata and a running plugin or process; it does not update radio-player metadata. |
Troubleshoot a title that will not update
- Check the source first: does the playout application show the correct current item and title?
- Check transmission: is the encoder sending metadata, or does your setup need a separate update function or host endpoint?
- Check the mount: is the update targeting the active live mount rather than a different mount?
- Check the request: for a host-supported endpoint, verify credentials, URL encoding, and character encoding against that provider’s documentation.
- Check server status: does Icecast status data show the new title? If not, the problem is upstream of OBS.
- Check the overlay path: is the metadata reader watching the correct source, writing the expected file, and still running? Does the OBS text source point to that file?
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube video stream made from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a different workflow from the Icecast and OBS metadata setup above: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube, not radio-player directories; the information here does not establish that it sends changing now-playing metadata to an Icecast mount or creates an OBS overlay.
