How to Add a Prerecorded Video to a YouTube Live Stream in Studio

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube Studio manages the live event, but it does not send a video file as the live feed. To play a prerecorded video on a YouTube live stream, create or schedule the event in Studio, connect encoder software using the stream URL and key, play the file through the encoder, then preview the incoming feed and click Go live in Studio.

Before you start

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube also says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
  • Choose encoder software that can play a local media file and send a feed to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as an open-source option available at no charge; the controls for adding a file depend on the software you choose. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  • Make sure you have the rights to stream every part of the video, including music, and that the content complies with YouTube’s rules. A prerecorded file is still live content for these purposes.

Set up the live event in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
  2. For an event you want to schedule, open Manage → Schedule stream, then create a new stream or reuse prior settings.
  3. Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. In your encoder, enter the URL in its server or URL field and the key in its stream-key field. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your event.

YouTube’s instructions describe Studio as the place to set up and manage the event, while the encoder supplies the live feed. Studio does not upload a local video file as that feed.

Play the prerecorded video through the encoder

  1. In the encoder, add the video file as a media or file source. The exact menu and settings vary by encoder.
  2. Set the output to a format and resolution the encoder and your upload connection can sustain. Check the encoder’s stream settings and use YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution; do not assume a file’s resolution alone determines the stream’s output.
  3. Start the encoder so it sends the file’s video and audio to YouTube. Confirm that playback is running and that the encoder reports a connection rather than an error.
  4. Return to Studio’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check that both picture and sound are present before selecting Go live.

For a scheduled event, starting the encoder sends the feed but does not itself start the public broadcast. Start the event in Studio when the preview is ready. To finish, end the event in Studio and stop sending the feed from the encoder.

Prepare the connection and event

  • Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate. The recommendation is intended to leave room for connection variation, not to replace checking your actual upload capacity.
  • Allow time to test. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before the stream and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Use that time to check Studio’s preview, audio, and video.
  • Keep a backup if the recording matters. YouTube recommends a local recording or archive backup. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s current Help guidance, but a separate copy gives you another recovery option.

These recommendations are from YouTube Help pages current when accessed on October 3, 2026; the pages did not show publication dates, and interface labels or guidance can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder instructions.

A trailer is not the main live video

YouTube’s scheduled-stream trailer feature plays a short video on the watch page before the scheduled broadcast begins. It does not send the main prerecorded video as the live feed; the encoder workflow above is still needed. YouTube says trailers are available to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes, and must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long. The trailer should match the main video’s aspect ratio and resolution. See YouTube’s scheduled-stream trailer guidance.

Rights and YouTube policy still apply

Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights needed to make the content available worldwide, including the necessary music licensing rights. YouTube’s livestream terms require compliance with its Community Guidelines and applicable law. Copyright matches to another copyrighted live broadcast, Community Guidelines violations, and other policy issues can result in restrictions. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and its copyright guidance. Prerecording does not bypass these requirements.

Troubleshooting

No preview appears in Studio

  • Confirm that the encoder is running and is pointed to the stream URL and key for the event currently open in Studio.
  • Check for a mistyped or outdated key, and confirm that the encoder has a working network connection.
  • Wait for the incoming signal to appear before selecting Go live. If you changed events, verify that you did not copy credentials from a different stream.

The preview has no picture or sound

  • Check that the correct file is loaded and playing in the encoder, and that the source is enabled in its scene or output.
  • Check the file’s audio track and the encoder’s audio source and meter. Verify playback in the preview rather than relying only on the encoder’s connection status.

The stream stutters or disconnects

  • Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with available upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  • Reduce the output demands in the encoder if the connection cannot sustain them, then check the preview again before going live.
  • Allow extra setup time and monitor the feed. Keep a local copy of the recording if you need a backup.

You cannot start live streaming

Check the channel’s verification and live-stream eligibility, including whether a restriction has been applied. YouTube’s eligibility requirements can change, so consult the current Help page.
