You can update the video OBS sends to YouTube without clicking Stop Streaming. To reduce the chance of interrupting the clip that is currently playing, prepare a second VLC Video source or scene with the revised playlist, preview it, then switch at a planned point. Editing the active VLC playlist can restart that source’s playback, and OBS does not guarantee that every scene or source switch will be glitch-free—test the handoff with your installed versions before relying on it live.
Choose the right OBS source for the loop
Use VLC Video for a playlist
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes VLC Video as the source that can play multiple media items in a playlist, with loop, shuffle and visibility options. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source to appear.
Use Media Source for an individual file
OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for an individual audio or video file. It can loop a file, but it is not the documented option for managing a playlist. A standalone demo can be added as a Media Source, though integrating it into an existing loop may require additional scene or source control.
Safer workflow: stage a revised playlist, then switch
- Identify the current source. In OBS, select the scene carrying the loop and inspect the Sources dock. Confirm whether the playlist is a VLC Video source or a collection of individually managed sources.
- Build the update separately. Add a second VLC Video source or make a separate scene containing a new VLC Video source. Put the existing videos and the new demo in the order you want. Set loop and shuffle as required, then preview the staged loop. This keeps the current source untouched while you prepare the change.
- Check visibility behavior. VLC Video can be configured to stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play when it is not visible. Choose the behavior that fits your scene-switch plan and test it: a source set to stop and restart may begin again when it becomes visible.
- Switch at a planned point. When the current demo finishes—or at another acceptable point—switch to the staged scene or source. Leave the broadcast running; do not click Stop Streaming. Check the OBS preview and, if available, YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the intended content is going out.
- Keep the old source until the new one is confirmed. Once you have verified the output, you can remove or retain the original source as needed. Keeping it temporarily gives you a straightforward fallback if the staged playlist behaves unexpectedly.
This is an operational approach based on OBS’s scene/source model, not a documented guarantee of a seamless transition. Try it with the OBS and VLC versions you will use for the live broadcast.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why changing the active VLC playlist can restart playback
In the current OBS VLC source implementation, applying source settings stops the media-list player, replaces its list and starts playback again if the source is active or set to always play. That means an edit to the active playlist may send its playback back to the start even while the separate YouTube broadcast connection remains active. The implementation does not establish a way to append a video to the active list while preserving its exact current playhead.
An OBS forum user has also reported that adding an item to a VLC playlist restarted playback at the first video. That is one person’s report, consistent with the implementation, not proof that every setup behaves identically.

Choose the update method that fits the situation
| Method | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Edit the active VLC playlist | You want the simplest update and can accept the source restarting. | The VLC source implementation stops and rebuilds the media list, then starts playback again. |
| Stage a second VLC source or scene | You want to prepare and preview the revised playlist before switching. | It takes extra setup and a deliberate handoff; glitch-free playback is not guaranteed. |
| Add the demo as a Media Source | The demo is a single file or a temporary standalone item. | Media Source is not the documented VLC playlist workflow; fitting the file into the loop takes additional scene or source control. |
What stays live—and what may change
Changing a scene or source changes the content OBS composes for output. Clicking Stop Streaming is a different action: it stops the streaming session. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance concerns encoder ingestion and protocol settings; it does not establish that a particular OBS scene switch will be seamless. The exact result can depend on the setup, so confirm the output rather than assuming that a running broadcast means the video handoff was clean.
Troubleshoot a restart or unexpected handoff
- The loop jumps back to the first video after an edit: This is consistent with the VLC source rebuilding its playlist. Prepare changes in a second source or scene, then switch instead of editing the active playlist.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The staged source starts from the beginning when shown: Check its visibility behavior. Stop-and-restart behavior can restart playback when the source becomes visible; test an appropriate pause/resume or always-play setting for your workflow.
- The YouTube broadcast remains live, but the handoff is wrong or disruptive: Verify the selected scene, source visibility and staged playlist in OBS, then confirm the outgoing content in YouTube Live Control Room. The broadcast connection and local media playback are separate concerns.
- You need to preserve the current clip’s exact position: Avoid applying changes to that active VLC playlist. The cited implementation evidence does not establish a way to append an item while retaining the active playhead.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than a local OBS setup, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists: upload your recordings, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
