Add a sport-specific scoreboard overlay to OBS or vMix using its public display URL, then rehearse score updates, sizing, and visibility before game time.

To add a scoreboard to a sports live stream, create a sport-specific scoreboard, copy its public display URL, and add that URL as a browser source or web input in your production software. Position it above the game video, size it to your production canvas, and test score updates before the event. The scoreboard service provides the graphic and a control page; OBS, vMix, or another production tool composites that graphic into the outgoing stream.

How a URL scoreboard overlay works

A scoreboard overlay is a graphic displayed over the camera feed or other program video. In a URL-based setup, the scoreboard service hosts the graphic and usually provides a separate page for operating it. Your streaming software loads the public display page as a browser source or web input, then combines it with the video.

Keep the two URLs straight when the service supplies both a display link and a control link: the production source needs the public display URL. A scorekeeper can operate the control panel from another computer, phone, or tablet, leaving the production operator free to manage cameras and scenes.

Add a scoreboard to OBS Studio

  1. Set up the scoreboard. In your chosen scoreboard service, select the sport and configure the teams, colors, layout, and relevant fields. Available controls differ by service and sport; check that it supports what your game needs.
  2. Copy the public display URL. Use the overlay or display link for the production source, not a private control-panel URL if the service distinguishes the two.
  3. Add a Browser source. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the overlay. In Sources, click +, choose Browser, name the source, and paste in the display URL.
  4. Match the source dimensions to the canvas. Set the Browser source width and height to your OBS Base (Canvas) Resolution. For example, if your canvas is 1920 × 1080 pixels, use those dimensions; that is a common Full HD example, not a required setting. Use the resolution actually configured in your production.
  5. Layer and place the overlay. In the Sources list, move the Browser source above the camera or video source. Position and size it so the score is readable without covering important action. Lock the source when its placement is right to avoid moving it accidentally.
  6. Test remote score control. Open the scoreboard control panel on a second device or separate browser. Change the score and clock, then verify that the OBS program preview updates.
  7. Rehearse before the event. Run a private or unlisted test stream. Confirm the source is visible, the correct sport-specific fields appear, the scorekeeper can make updates, and the production computer can reach the overlay over its network connection.

Depending on the service and sport, controls may include a score, clock, period, half, set, quarter, substitutions, player names, or sponsor graphics. Do not assume every scoreboard includes every field.

Add a scoreboard to vMix

  1. Create or open the scoreboard, then copy its public display URL.
  2. In vMix, choose Add Input, open Web Browser, paste the URL, and add the input.
  3. Activate the input with a numbered overlay button. Use the input’s Position settings to zoom, move, or crop it as needed.
  4. Operate the scoreboard from its control panel, which can be open on another computer, phone, or tablet. The score operator does not need to use vMix’s production controls.
  5. Test the input and score updates before the event, including after switching scenes or overlays if those are part of your show.

Use a scoreboard overlay in other production software

A URL-based overlay may work in other production tools that accept a web URL. OBScoreboard lists OBS Studio, vMix, Streamlabs, Wirecast, YoloBox, Ecamm Live, and XSplit on its integrations page, but that is the provider’s compatibility claim, not a guarantee for every version or setup. Check the current instructions from both the overlay provider and your production software.

Hardware switchers can use a different overlay workflow or link format from OBS. Verify how your specific device handles web content and transparency rather than assuming a browser-source setup will transfer unchanged.

Troubleshoot common scoreboard problems

  • Nothing appears: Confirm the source or input is enabled and layered above the game video. Check that you pasted the display URL and that the production system has network access to it.
  • The overlay is too large, blurry, or cropped: Match the source dimensions to the actual canvas or output resolution. Reset unintended transforms before resizing and positioning the source.
  • The score does not change: Check that the control panel is connected and that the production source uses the display URL, not the control URL. Once you have confirmed the link, refresh or reload the source if needed.
  • The background is black or transparency looks wrong: Check the scoreboard provider’s instructions and your production software’s settings. Hardware switchers may handle transparency differently from OBS.
  • The clock resets after a scene change: Some web sources reload when hidden. Check the source’s shutdown or reload behavior and whether the scoreboard service resynchronizes its state.
  • vMix is slow or the web input will not load: Check the network connection and firewall access. KeepTheScore’s vMix guide also recommends wired Ethernet, closing unnecessary browser tabs, and checking graphics and browser settings; these are practical checks, not guaranteed fixes.
