Run an encoder on the Contabo VPS to combine a still image and an audio playlist into one audio/video stream, then send that stream to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube does not receive the image and playlist as separate inputs in this workflow. The exact commands depend on your VPS operating system, encoder build, media formats and account setup, so validate those details rather than relying on a generic command.
How the setup works
Your image and audio files are inputs on the VPS. An encoder reads them, creates a compatible audio/video output and sends that output to YouTube. For the usual RTMP-family setup, YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The encoder needs the server URL and stream key shown for your stream in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
This is suitable for a broadcast whose picture remains still while audio plays, such as a music or ambience stream. It is not a way to send separate image and playlist tracks to YouTube, and it does not turn a VPS into a camera source.
Prepare the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- If this is your first YouTube live stream, enable live streaming on the account. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key into your encoder’s connection settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in a publicly accessible command or log.
Prepare the image and playlist on the VPS
Make the still image and every audio file accessible to the encoder under stable paths. Before configuring the output, check that the files exist, the service account can read them, and the encoder supports their formats and codecs.

- Choose the audio order and decide whether playback should advance once or repeat. Confirm the playlist mechanism you use actually implements that behavior; YouTube’s setup pages do not specify a playlist-file format.
- Check image dimensions and ensure the encoder is configured to use the image as continuing video input. A static picture still needs to be part of the encoded video output.
- Confirm that the outgoing stream includes both video and audio. The encoder—not YouTube—must combine the inputs.
Choose an ingestion protocol and output settings
RTMPS for the common workflow
For RTMP-family ingestion, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. A conservative starting point for a static-image stream is SDR video at a supported resolution and frame rate, unless you have a genuine HDR source and a reason to use HDR. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide also lists square pixels and progressive scan among its advanced recommendations.
Match bitrate to resolution and frame rate
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not measured guarantees of the capacity available on a particular VPS:

Use a bitrate suited to the selected output and the VPS’s sustained upload capacity, with operating headroom. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and choosing a quality appropriate to the connection; a short peak reading is not proof that the server can sustain the stream. Its guide lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, with stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
HLS only when the encoder supports its requirements
HLS is not simply another name for RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS setup guide requires 1–4-second MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. Choose it only if your encoder can produce the required format and playlist behavior.

Test before relying on the stream
YouTube Help says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” A still-image broadcast has little visual movement, but the test should still exercise the actual encoder output and playlist behavior. Monitor YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while testing.
- Confirm the intended image is visible and not black or cropped unexpectedly.
- Listen for clear audio at a sensible level; verify the playlist advances or repeats in the intended order.
- Confirm Live Control Room reports healthy ingestion and that the stream remains stable for a representative duration.
- Watch VPS CPU and network use while the encoder is running. The required capacity depends on the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, acceleration and other workloads.
Plan for restart and stream ending
Configure process monitoring or restart behavior only after validating it for your chosen operating system and encoder implementation. A generic service file or restart command is not safe to prescribe without knowing those details. Make sure you can tell the difference between an encoder process stopping, a YouTube ingestion problem and a deliberate end to the broadcast.

YouTube’s encoder guide says stopping encoder output ends the stream, and that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer; check the current YouTube encoder guidance for your planned duration.

Hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but a VPS may not expose compatible hardware. OBS also notes that older-generation hardware encoders can deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with its default veryfast preset. That is general encoder guidance, not evidence that a particular Contabo VPS includes a GPU or that OBS is the right choice for this workflow. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.
Troubleshoot common failures
No image or black output
- Check the image path, file permissions and dimensions.
- Confirm the encoder is using the image as its video input and is producing video in the outgoing stream.
- Review the encoder’s input and output logs for file-reading or format errors.
No audio
- Check playlist paths and permissions, decoder support and the selected audio stream.
- Verify that the encoder is muxing audio into the output rather than only reading it locally.
- Listen to the encoder output during a test and check the audio format settings.
Dropped frames or unstable ingestion
- Check encoder logs, VPS CPU and network use, and YouTube stream health.
- Compare the configured bitrate with sustained available upload capacity; lower the output demand if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Test for long enough to expose load or network instability before leaving the stream unattended.
HLS stream rejected
Check that the output uses MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT and no byte ranges, as required by YouTube’s HLS guide.
Unexpected end or archive uncertainty
Check whether the encoder stopped sending output and whether the stream was ended deliberately. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; do not infer that rule for longer broadcasts.
