To show a still image after the last clip in an FFmpeg playlist, first render the image as a video of a chosen duration, then place that video last in the concat-demuxer list. The image will appear when the preceding clips finish and remain only for the fallback video’s duration. For an indefinite tail, use a supervised source transition or another arrangement that continues beyond a finite file.
Prepare a fallback video that matches the playlist
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads files in sequence as though their packets were joined together. For reliable concatenation, the files need matching stream layouts, codecs and time bases. A still image by itself is not a drop-in infinite ending: prepare it as a video file with the required duration and compatible streams. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.
- Inspect the playlist. Check the video dimensions, frame rate, codecs, time bases, and whether each clip has audio. Decide what video and audio stream layout the concatenated output should use. If the source clips differ, normalize or re-encode them and the fallback to a common format before concatenating.
- Render the still image as video. Choose the output dimensions and frame rate to match the playlist, and set a duration long enough for the tail you need. If the preceding playlist output is expected to keep an audio stream present, include silent audio in the fallback; otherwise make sure its stream layout still matches the preceding files.
- Put the fallback last. Create a concat list in playlist order, with the fallback file after the final clip. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0 file 'clip-01.mp4' file 'clip-02.mp4' file 'fallback.mp4' - Stream at real-time speed. Use the concat input as the source for your FFmpeg stream to the YouTube ingest URL configured for the channel. Keep the stream key private. Confirm the options against your installed FFmpeg build and test the transition with a short private or unlisted run before relying on it.
A duration directive in the concat list can override a file’s stored duration, but it does not make an image tail infinite. FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer has a loop option for an image input; that option is not a general instruction for the concat demuxer to continue an arbitrary finite playlist forever. Exact commands depend on your media files and output setup, so verify stream compatibility and behavior on the FFmpeg build you will deploy.
Choose between a bounded fallback and an indefinite tail
| Approach | Duration | Continuity and compatibility | Operational needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-rendered fallback video appended to the playlist | Bounded: the image lasts for the fallback file’s duration. | Simple and predictable when the fallback streams match the playlist. The stream can continue from the last clip into the fallback, but ends when the fallback ends. | Prepare the file and test the transition. No ongoing source-switching logic is needed for a finite tail. |
| Supervised transition to a continuing still-image source | Potentially indefinite, if the process keeps running. | Can continue beyond a finite file, but a restart or source change may interrupt the viewer’s stream. Compatibility depends on the actual streaming setup. | Requires a process to detect playlist completion, switch sources, and be monitored and tested in the deployment environment. |
If you only need the image to cover a known gap or end portion, the appended fallback is usually the simpler option. If the channel must remain live indefinitely, a finite fallback alone cannot guarantee that; use a sufficiently long file for a bounded session or supervise a transition to a continuing source.

Check YouTube Live delivery settings
Before streaming, compare your encoder setup with YouTube’s live encoder settings. Its published guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Recommendations can change, so recheck YouTube’s page before a live session.
- Test with audio and motion similar to the actual stream, and monitor stream health.
- Use a private or unlisted test to confirm the playlist-to-fallback transition and check for missing audio, a frozen image, or a stream ending earlier than intended.
- Do not publish or share the stream key. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live control room and update your FFmpeg configuration.
- Use video and audio you have permission to stream. A technical fallback does not grant rights to the playlist content; review YouTube’s copyright rules and policies for your use case.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The concat input fails or playback breaks at a clip boundary: the files may not have matching stream layouts, codecs, or time bases. Inspect the inputs and normalize or re-encode the clips and fallback to a common format.
- The image appears, then the stream ends: the fallback file has a finite duration. Render a longer fallback for a longer planned session, or implement and test a supervised transition to a continuing source.
- The fallback has no audio or the stream changes unexpectedly: its audio stream may not match the preceding files. Add silent audio if the output is expected to keep an audio stream, or otherwise make the fallback’s stream layout compatible.
- The stream does not meet YouTube’s ingest guidance: check the selected protocol, video and audio codecs, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder page. Test with similar content and monitor stream health.
- The playlist does not reach the fallback as expected: check the concat list’s order and file paths, confirm the fallback is last, and test the exact installed FFmpeg build. Local builds can differ in age and compiled components.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
