To add a waveform to an always-on podcast stream in OBS Studio, install an OBS visualizer plugin, add its source to the scene that stays on air, and select the same audio source that feeds your stream. Waveform is the simplest starting point for a conventional waveform or spectrum; Audio Waves Visualizer is an option for shader-driven templates and effects.
Choose a visualizer that fits your OBS setup

These are requirements stated on the respective plugin listings, not a guarantee that every operating-system build or OBS packaging format behaves identically. OBS recommends checking each plugin’s own documentation. OBS plugin guide
Install the plugin and add it to the on-air scene
- Check your OBS version and installation type. Match the plugin’s stated minimum version and platform. If you use Flatpak OBS on Linux, install Waveform in Flatpak form too, as the project instructions specify.
- Install from the plugin’s official resource page or project instructions. Follow its platform-specific steps. Restart OBS if the installer or plugin instructions require it.
- Open the scene that carries the continuous podcast program. In the OBS Sources area, add the visualizer source using the plugin’s controls. The exact source name and configuration fields depend on the plugin and version; consult its documentation if they differ from the steps here.
- Select the program audio source. Choose the OBS mixer source carrying the podcast audio sent to the stream—not an unrelated desktop, microphone, or temporary media source. First confirm that its OBS audio meter moves while the podcast is playing. Waveform describes its display as applying to an audio source; Audio Waves Visualizer likewise listens to a selected OBS source and analyzes its audio for the visual.
- Place and size the graphic on the canvas. Position it so viewers can read it without covering branding, episode information, or other important scene content. Adjust its color and opacity as needed, then check the actual program output rather than relying only on the source preview.
- Test the intended style on the production machine. Audio Waves templates and custom effects offer more visual control, but its author warns that some themes may cause lag on weaker GPUs. Try a simpler template or Waveform style if performance suffers.
Make the scene suitable for continuous output
Keep the visualizer in the scene that is actually used for the ongoing stream. If your show switches scenes, check that the active scene still contains the visualizer and that its selected audio source remains the program feed. A plugin’s ability to display audio does not itself establish that OBS or the plugin will recover from every crash, reconnect, source switch, or computer restart.
Before leaving the stream unattended, test the full workflow on the system you intend to use: play audio, verify the graphic follows it, switch through the scenes you use, and check the output after a reconnect and an OBS or system restart. The plugin listings and OBS guidance do not certify a particular 24/7 reliability level.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect visualizer
- The visualizer source does not appear: Check that the plugin matches your operating system, OBS version, and OBS package type. Review its installation notes and restart OBS after installation. OBS advises consulting plugin documentation.
- The graphic is static: Confirm that the selected source is the podcast feed and that its OBS meter responds while audio plays. A visualizer cannot react to a source that is silent or not selected.
- It follows the wrong sound: Change the visualizer’s selected input to the program feed that viewers hear. Desktop audio, a microphone, or a temporary media source may not be the stream mix.
- OBS becomes sluggish: Try a simpler Waveform display or a less demanding Audio Waves template. The Audio Waves author specifically warns that some themes can cause lag on weaker GPUs.
- The graphic disappears after a scene change or restart: Verify that the scene currently on air includes the visualizer and that the chosen audio source is still available. Test reconnect and restart behavior on your own setup; the reviewed documentation does not promise automatic recovery for these cases.

Keep the stream and its content in mind
A visualizer only changes what viewers see; it does not establish that the audio or video is cleared for continuous public streaming. Use recordings you have the rights to stream and check the applicable YouTube rules for copyright and reused content before running a feed continuously.
