How to Add an Audio Visualizer to an Internet Radio YouTube Livestream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add a visualizer to an internet radio station’s YouTube livestream, compose the station audio and a visualizer-capable video source in OBS Studio, then send that combined scene to YouTube Live. The audio must reach OBS as an input, and the visualizer must be visible in the scene being streamed; playing radio audio on its own does not create video.

What you need

  • OBS Studio or another software encoder that can combine video and audio sources and send an encoder stream to YouTube Live. OBS’s official Knowledge Base points to its Quick Start Guide and separate guidance for Sources & Filters, Audio, and Streaming; check the documentation and controls for your installed version at OBS Studio Knowledge Base.
  • Access to the station’s program audio from the encoder. Depending on the station setup, that may be an application output, a device input, or audio routed from external equipment. The exact route depends on the playout software, operating system, and signal path.
  • A video source for the visualizer. Choose a visualizer-capable source supported by your OBS version, or use a static or animated background if you do not need it to react to the music. Confirm that the source appears in the final scene.
  • A YouTube live stream setup with the stream key available to the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.

Build the scene in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, create a scene for the radio broadcast. Add the visual source you intend viewers to see, such as a supported audio-reactive visualizer or a branded background. Arrange and resize sources in the canvas so the important content fits the video frame.
  2. Route the station audio into OBS. In the station’s playout or automation system, identify the program output that carries the broadcast mix. Select that output as an OBS audio source using a routing method supported by your software and operating system. If the output is on another machine or leaves through physical equipment, use the supported network or hardware route for that setup rather than assuming OBS can capture it directly.
  3. Check the audio meter. Play the station feed and confirm that the chosen OBS source shows signal activity. If the visualizer reacts to audio, verify that it responds to this same program feed—not an unrelated microphone or desktop sound.
  4. Check the final mix. Watch the OBS preview while the station is playing. Confirm that the visualizer or background is visible and that the station audio is present in the encoder mix. Avoid unintentionally capturing duplicate audio sources, which can make the result louder or produce an echo.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Use OBS’s supported YouTube streaming integration or the stream settings provided in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the exact server and stream-key details shown for your stream, and do not share the key.

Choose YouTube encoder settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS workflows, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. The available choices depend on the encoder and setup. For a conventional OBS workflow, use the encoder’s supported YouTube integration and start with YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS recommendations rather than choosing HLS without a specific need.

Setting Guidance
Video bitrate YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations; select a stable bitrate that fits your available upload capacity.
Keyframe interval Two seconds is recommended; the interval should not exceed four seconds.
Rate control Use constant bitrate encoding.
Audio AAC or MP3 is supported. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced settings.
Resolution and frame rate Choose a resolution and frame rate that your encoder and upload connection can sustain. The examples above are for 30 fps; YouTube’s guidance covers frame rates up to 60 fps.

For current options and recommendations, see YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. A visualizer with movement can expose frame drops or an unstable connection that a still image may not reveal, so test with representative motion before the broadcast.

Test the stream before opening it to viewers

  1. Start the encoder output and check the live preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
  2. Play the station audio and confirm it is audible in the preview on a separate viewer device. Listening separately helps catch missing audio, excessive level, or an unintended echo.
  3. Watch the visualizer move—or confirm the intended background is present—and check that the video remains stable.
  4. Check stream health and any messages in Live Control Room. Resolve warnings or missing audio/video before sharing the live link.

YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual stream. Test with the station audio and representative visualizer activity, not only a static scene.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?

For a typical OBS setup, use the supported YouTube encoder workflow with RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for general streaming. HLS is a separate ingestion method intended for high-quality or high-resolution content where relatively higher latency is acceptable. YouTube’s HLS documentation specifies additional format and packaging requirements, including muxed audio and video in M2TS, supported H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and segmented media playlists. Use HLS only when your encoder and delivery requirements specifically call for it, and follow YouTube’s HLS requirements at YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion.

Troubleshoot common problems

The live preview has video but no station audio

  • Confirm the playout system is playing to the output selected in OBS.
  • Check that the correct OBS audio source is enabled and its meter moves while the station plays.
  • If the program audio comes from another computer or physical output, verify that the routing path into the encoder is supported and connected.
  • Listen on a separate viewer device after checking the OBS preview; a moving meter alone does not confirm that viewers receive the right mix.

The audio is present but the visualizer does not move

  • Confirm the visualizer source is in the scene being streamed and is visible in the OBS preview.
  • Check whether it is receiving the station’s program audio rather than a different input.
  • Verify that the chosen visualizer source works with your installed OBS version and its documented configuration. There is no single visualizer plugin or source that can be assumed to be available in every setup.

The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health

  • Choose a lower resolution or bitrate if your upload connection cannot sustain the selected settings.
  • Check that bitrate is constant and the keyframe interval is within YouTube’s guidance.
  • Run another test with moving video and audio, then review Live Control Room messages before going public.

The audio is doubled, distorted, or echoed

  • Check whether the station feed is entering OBS through more than one active source.
  • Mute unrelated desktop or microphone capture sources if they are not part of the broadcast mix.
  • Listen to the outgoing stream on a separate device to distinguish an encoder mix problem from local monitoring.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Before streaming, make sure you have the necessary rights to broadcast the station’s music, recordings, and other material on YouTube. A visualizer does not change the rights status of the audio. Check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules for your channel and content before going live; do not assume that owning or operating an internet radio station automatically grants permission to rebroadcast every track on YouTube.
