How to Add Background Music to a Nonstop YouTube Stream from a VPS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add background music to a nonstop YouTube stream from a VPS, run an encoder on the VPS that continuously sends both video and audio to YouTube Live. Get the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room, test the full audio-video feed, then supervise and monitor the encoder before relying on it unattended. Music must be licensed for livestream use, and YouTube may interrupt a stream when it detects third-party content—even if you have a license but the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel.

How the VPS setup works

The VPS runs the encoder; YouTube receives its audio-video feed at an ingestion URL. In YouTube’s API model, a live stream represents the transmitted feed and is associated with a live broadcast. The music is part of that feed’s audio, so your encoder pipeline must emit both the chosen video and audio continuously.

You can use a graphical encoder such as OBS or a command-line encoder such as FFmpeg. Choose based on the way you prefer to manage the VPS, handle playlists, monitor the process and recover from restarts. The official documentation cited below establishes YouTube’s ingestion requirements and FFmpeg’s RTMPS protocol support; it does not establish that one encoder is universally better or provide a universally correct playlist-loop command.

Prepare YouTube Live and the VPS

Enable live streaming and get the ingest details

  1. Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel if it is not already enabled.
  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a broadcast and open its stream settings. Follow the current interface to retrieve the stream key and select the RTMPS URL. YouTube says the secure URL is identified under Stream settings; labels and steps may change over time. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions.
  3. Use the URL shown for your stream rather than an endpoint copied from an older tutorial. Keep the stream key private: it is the credential your encoder uses to publish to your channel. If it is exposed, rotate it through YouTube’s stream settings.

Prepare the media and encoder

  1. Place the video source and music files or playlist on the VPS, where the encoder can access them.
  2. Configure OBS or FFmpeg to combine the intended video and music into one continuous audio-video output. Confirm that the audio is included in the outgoing program, not merely playing on a desktop or in a separate local application.
  3. Configure the encoder to publish to the RTMPS URL using the stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS guide requires a valid secure ingestion URL and application path, connection to port 443, and the correct hostname for TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) authentication. Use an encoder and URL arrangement that preserves those requirements. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

FFmpeg documents RTMP as a multimedia streaming protocol over TCP/IP and RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. That protocol documentation does not validate a particular YouTube command line or playlist setup. Check the documentation for your installed encoder build and validate your chosen pipeline with a test stream: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Start a short test broadcast before setting up continuous operation.
  2. Check the YouTube preview and stream health. Confirm that the video appears, audio is present and intelligible, and the connection remains active.
  3. Inspect health information for reported issues. YouTube’s LiveStreams API includes health status and names issues such as noAudioStream, videoBitrateLow and framerateMismatch. These are signals to investigate; they do not identify every possible encoder, media-file or VPS problem. See YouTube’s LiveStreams reference.
  4. After the test succeeds, configure a service supervisor appropriate to the VPS operating system and monitor the encoder process and stream externally. Choose a service manager that fits your operating system, and test its restart behavior. The exact supervisor configuration depends on the OS and encoder setup.

No VPS size, bitrate, frame rate, uptime figure or resource benchmark is established here for this workload. Verify that the particular VPS can sustain your chosen media and encoder settings instead of assuming any plan is sufficient.

Protect the stream from music-rights interruptions

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it identifies third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

  • Before streaming a track, confirm that its license expressly covers continuous YouTube livestream use. A license for personal listening, downloads, or ordinary video uploads may not establish livestream rights.
  • If you have permission but still receive a match, contact the rights owner about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube notes that a licensed track can still interrupt a live stream if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel.
  • If the live stream is archived, Content ID claims against the archived stream are made after the stream is completed. Not archiving does not remove the live-stream scanning and interruption risk.

Troubleshooting connection and audio problems

Symptom What to check What to do
Connection times out or TLS/SSL connection fails Whether you used the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than an RTMP URL; whether the encoder supports RTMPS; and whether the connection uses port 443. Copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS support in the encoder, and check the documented port and hostname/SNI requirements in YouTube Help and Google’s ingestion guide.
Video is visible but there is no stream audio Whether the encoder’s outgoing program includes the music source and whether YouTube reports noAudioStream. Check the audio source and encoder output routing, then repeat a short test and verify audio in YouTube’s preview and health information.
YouTube reports low video bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch The stream health issue named by YouTube, plus the encoder’s actual output settings. Check that the configured output matches the media and intended stream settings, then test again. The cited sources do not establish universal bitrate or frame-rate values for every VPS and stream.
Live stream is interrupted after music starts YouTube’s warning or placeholder, the track’s livestream license scope, and whether the rights owner has allowlisted your channel. Stop using the disputed track until you resolve the rights issue. Confirm the license and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting when applicable.
Encoder stops or does not recover after a VPS restart The encoder process, service supervisor configuration and external monitoring. Review logs and the supervisor’s restart behavior for your operating system, then test recovery deliberately before relying on unattended operation.
