Add manual chapters to a livestream replay by putting verified timestamps and segment titles in the video’s YouTube Studio description. Start with 00:00, list at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. First confirm that an archive exists: YouTube warns that a livestream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Before adding chapters, confirm the replay was saved
A 24/7 broadcast presents an archive problem before it presents a chaptering problem. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not assume one continuous replay will be available for a full-day broadcast.
Keep a local recording or other backup of the program. YouTube recommends recording a local archive, which gives you a source to work from if the platform does not capture the stream. If the replay is missing or shorter than expected, check your local copy rather than planning chapters for footage that is not in the archive.
How to add manual chapters in YouTube Studio
- Open the archived video. In YouTube Studio, go to Content and select the livestream replay you want to edit. Check its duration and scrub through the timeline so your chapter list matches the footage that actually exists.
- Mark meaningful transitions. Note the time where each song, story, activity, or other segment begins. For a children’s stream, use labels that help a viewer find the program part they want to revisit. YouTube does not prescribe how often to add chapters or how to name them; choose genuine, useful boundaries rather than an arbitrary interval.
- Enter the timestamps and titles in the description. The first timestamp must be
00:00; include at least three timestamps, put them in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. For example, replace these illustrative times with times verified against your archive:00:00 Welcome and opening song 12:34 Story time 25:10 Movement activity 38:02 Closing song
- Save and verify playback. Save the description, then check the replay player. Confirm that each marker lands at the intended segment and that chapter navigation appears. Chapters let viewers jump to and rewatch parts of a video.
Manual chapters or automatic chapters?
| Approach | Control | Effort | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual timestamps | You choose markers from verified points in the replay. | Requires reviewing the timeline and entering the list in the description. | Follow YouTube’s explicit formatting requirements: start at 00:00, use at least three ascending timestamps, and make chapters at least 10 seconds long. Manual timestamps replace automatic chapters. |
| Automatic chapters | YouTube determines the chaptering when the feature is available. | Does not require you to draft a timestamp list. | Generation and eligibility are not guaranteed. In Studio, creators can allow automatic chapters when available or opt out. |
For a children’s archive where segment names matter, manual markers give you control over what viewers see. You can review automatic chapters as an alternative, but do not count on them being generated.

Made for Kids settings, description limits, and corrections
Set the audience honestly
YouTube requires creators to set the audience for livestreams and provides a way to update the audience setting on an archived livestream. Its help page lists features restricted on Made for Kids content, but chapters are not among those listed. The documentation does not explicitly guarantee chapter controls or chapter display on every Made for Kids archive. Set the audience accurately; do not change it just to try to obtain a feature.
Leave room in the description
YouTube descriptions have a 5,000-character limit, so keep the chapter list concise enough to fit with the rest of your description. If you add a correction section, YouTube says to place it after any video chapters.

Why a 24-hour livestream may not have a replay
YouTube’s archive guidance says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means a missing replay is not necessarily a chapter-setting problem. For long-running broadcasts, retain a local recording so you have a copy to chapter even if YouTube’s archive is unavailable. If only part of a stream appears, chapter only the footage present in the replay or work from the complete local recording.
