Add chapters to the replay after the livestream ends: in YouTube Studio, open Content, select the replay, put timestamp-and-title entries in its description, and save. Start at 00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make every chapter at least 10 seconds long. YouTube documents these rules for videos generally; applying them to a livestream replay follows from YouTube describing replays as videos on a channel.

Before adding chapters: wait for the replay

You can edit the recording once the completed livestream replay is available on your channel as a video. YouTube says a channel may post a replay after a stream ends, and replays appear as videos on the channel: Learn about live streams.

YouTube’s chapter instructions are for videos generally, not a separate livestream-replay workflow. Using them on a replay is therefore an application of the general video procedure, rather than a distinct rule YouTube states specifically for replays.

Add timestamps in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
  2. Select the completed livestream replay to open its video details.
  3. In the description, add each chapter timestamp followed by a short title. Begin with 00:00; include at least three entries in ascending order, and ensure each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds.
  4. Save the video details.
  5. Open the replay’s watch page and check the description and player progress bar for chapter divisions. YouTube describes chapters as navigable sections shown in the player and description.

For example, this format meets the basic structure rules; use boundaries and labels that reflect the actual podcast recording:

For details and the official chapter requirements, see YouTube Help’s Video Chapters. To reach the description editor, YouTube’s Upload YouTube videos – Computer help describes the Studio video-details workflow. The description limit listed there is 5,000 characters, so keep the full description, including chapter entries, within that limit.

Check these rules if chapters do not appear

  • First timestamp: The first entry must start at 00:00.
  • Count and order: Include at least three timestamps, arranged from earliest to latest.
  • Chapter length: Make each interval at least 10 seconds long.
  • Saved description: Save the video details, then reload the replay page to check the description and player.
  • Eligibility: YouTube says automatic chapters are not available for every video. An active channel strike or content that may be inappropriate to some viewers can affect chapter availability. These are eligibility cautions, not a diagnosis of every missing manual chapter. See YouTube’s chapter guidance.

Manual chapters, automatic chapters, and stream markers

Manual timestamps let you choose the boundaries and labels; YouTube says manual chapters override automatic chapters. Automatic chapters are subject to eligibility. If you want specific sections such as an episode intro, guest background, topic changes, or a closing segment, manually writing the list gives you control over those divisions.

Add chapters to the replay description using the video chapter procedure. See Create a highlight for stream markers.
