To crossfade ambient nature clips in OBS Studio, put each clip in its own scene, choose the built-in Fade scene transition, set its duration, then switch between the scenes. This creates a visual dissolve; it is different from playing several clips in one playlist.
Set up one scene per clip
- Create a scene for each video. In the Scenes dock, add a scene for each nature clip and give each a clear name, such as “Forest” or “Waterfall.”
- Add the clip as a Media Source. Select a scene, use the Sources dock to add a Media Source, and choose that scene’s local video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM. If you want that clip to repeat while its scene is active, enable Loop in the source properties. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Match the layout across scenes. Set the video’s size and position in each scene so the picture does not jump when you switch clips. Source order determines which elements appear on top; keep any foreground overlays above the video source. See the OBS Sources guide.
- Choose the transition. In the Scene Transitions dock, select Fade. Adjust the transition duration to suit the footage and pacing. OBS makes the Fade transition available from first launch and allows its duration to be changed; its documentation does not prescribe one ideal duration. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Switch between scenes. Make one clip’s scene active, then switch to another. OBS applies the selected Fade as the scene changes. Preview or record the result and check that the dissolve looks natural and the audio changes as intended before streaming.
Choose between separate scenes and a playlist

OBS’s Media Sources guide describes Media Source and VLC Video as different source options. A playlist can simplify clip playback, but that alone should not be treated as a per-item crossfade feature.
Automate scene changes between clips
If you want scenes to change without manually selecting each one, Advanced Scene Switcher is a third-party plugin that supports macro-based automation. Its OBS forum listing showed version 1.36.1, last updated August 7, 2026, and listed OBS Studio 31.1.1 as the minimum version at that time. Plugin compatibility can change, so check the current listing and your OBS version before installing it. Automation changes scenes; use OBS’s Fade transition to control the visual dissolve.
Make a custom mask-based transition
For an effect more designed than a straightforward dissolve, OBS supports Track Matte Stinger transitions. A matte uses black to show the current scene, white to show the next scene, and gray values for partial blending. When combining the stinger and matte, OBS recommends putting them together in one file: separate files are disabled because OBS cannot guarantee that they will decode in sync. Check the result before going live
- Confirm that each scene uses the intended clip and that the framing is consistent across scenes.
- Watch the transition in a recording or preview; choose a duration based on the footage and the atmosphere you want rather than assuming there is a universal setting.
- Listen through the change. A visual scene Fade does not, by itself, establish that the audio will mix the way you want in every setup.
- Check the complete sequence, including any looped clips, before relying on it during a live stream.
