To add Hindi subtitles to an ended YouTube Live event, open YouTube Studio, select the replay under Subtitles, add Hindi, then upload a timed subtitle file or create the track manually. You can use Auto-sync only when the transcript is in the same language as the spoken audio; it does not translate speech into Hindi.
Choose the right Hindi subtitle method
First decide whether you need to transcribe Hindi speech or translate speech from another language. If the recording is already in Hindi, YouTube may generate automatic captions for the replay, which you can check and correct. If the audio is in another language and you want Hindi subtitles, prepare a Hindi translation and add it as a subtitle track.
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Upload a timed subtitle file | You already have Hindi subtitles with timestamps. | YouTube supports subtitle files including basic SubRip (.srt) in plain UTF-8. Check timing and encoding before upload. |
| Type subtitles manually | A short replay or a small number of corrections. | Enter or paste Hindi text while playing the replay, then publish the track. |
| Auto-sync a transcript | You have a transcript in the same language as the spoken audio and need YouTube to time it. | It is not a translation method. YouTube says Auto-sync is not recommended for videos over an hour or with poor audio. |
| Review automatic VOD captions | You want a first-pass transcription of speech in a language supported for long-form automatic captions. | Captions can be delayed or inaccurate and require review. Automatic captions do not translate non-Hindi speech into Hindi. |
Add Hindi subtitles in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Subtitles from the left menu.
- Select the archived live-event video you want to edit.
- Choose Add language, then select Hindi.
- In the Hindi row, select Add.
- Choose the method that matches your material:
- Upload file: Choose a supported subtitle file if your Hindi captions are already timed. YouTube describes subtitle files as containing text and timestamps; a basic .srt file should be plain UTF-8.
- Type manually: Enter or paste the Hindi subtitles as you play the replay, checking each caption against the spoken moment.
- Auto-sync: Provide a transcript that matches the language spoken in the video. YouTube synchronizes that text to the video; use a Hindi translation file or manual entry instead if the source speech is in a different language.
- Save or publish the subtitle track, then open the replay and verify that the Hindi text appears at the right times.
YouTube’s labels can change. Its current help pages describe the Studio workflow in Add subtitles & captions and accepted upload formats in Supported subtitle and closed caption files.
Understand live captions versus replay subtitles
Captions sent during a broadcast and subtitles added to its archived replay are different workflows. YouTube’s live-caption instructions cover sending captions into a broadcast, either embedded in the video or through supported software that sends captions over HTTP POSTs. For an event that has already ended, edit the replay in Studio instead; live-caption ingestion is not the way to add a new Hindi track afterward. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.

YouTube Help says, “Automatic captions for live streams are available in English only.” Hindi being listed for automatic captions on long-form videos does not mean Hindi live automatic captions are available. After a stream ends, its live automatic captions do not remain on the replay; YouTube generates captions separately through its VOD process, and those captions may differ. Check whether VOD captions are available for the replay and whether they match its spoken language. For details, see Use automatic captioning.
Check and correct the finished track
Play the replay from beginning to end, or review every section where subtitles appear, before relying on the track. Check that the Devanagari script is intact, captions appear and disappear at sensible moments, and line breaks do not obscure meaning. Pay particular attention to names, accents, dialects, mispronunciations, and background noise: YouTube warns that these can lead to recognition errors in machine-generated captions. Correct errors in Studio and publish the revised track.
