How to Add Lower Thirds with the Roland V-1HD

Use a black- or white-background HDMI graphic and the matching luminance key to place a lower third over video on the original Roland V-1HD.

To add a lower third on the original Roland V-1HD, send a graphic with a solid black or white background into an HDMI input, key out that background, then composite the graphic over your camera or video. Assign WHT-L-KEY for a white background or BLK-L-KEY for a black one. Check the result on the HDMI preview output before taking it to program.

What you need

  • The original Roland V-1HD (not the V-1HD+).
  • A lower-third graphic displayed by a computer or other HDMI source, connected to one of the switcher’s HDMI inputs.
  • A camera or other video source for the background, plus a monitor connected to the V-1HD’s HDMI preview output so you can inspect the composite.

The V-1HD’s documented workflow composites an incoming graphic source; the cited official material does not establish an internal editable title generator or a dedicated lower-third creation recipe. Preparing and sending the graphic from a separate HDMI source is therefore a practical way to use its keying function, rather than a built-in title-editing feature. See Roland’s V-1HD product page for the original switcher’s connections and capabilities.

Prepare a graphic for keying

  1. Create a single-frame lower third with the text or logo placed where it should appear over the video.
  2. Fill the rest of the frame with solid black or solid white. Use the color you intend to key out, and avoid using that color in text or artwork that must remain visible.
  3. Display the graphic from a computer or another HDMI source and connect it to one of the V-1HD’s HDMI inputs.

Luminance keying is the straightforward choice for text or logos on black or white. Roland describes it this way: “Using luminance keying lets you superimpose logos or text onto a background picture.”

Set up and add the lower third

  1. Choose the key effect. Press MEMORY. Use the TRANSFORMER up/down buttons to select EFFECTS A or EFFECTS B. Use the A/B fader to assign WHT-L-KEY for a white graphic background or BLK-L-KEY for a black one to the selected EFFECTS ON button. Roland documents this as the procedure for selecting a compositing effect.
  2. Enable the effect. Press the corresponding EFFECTS A ON or EFFECTS B ON button. The button lights when the effect is on.
  3. Select the background and graphic sources. Use the A-1–A-4 and B-1–B-4 buttons to choose the camera/video and graphic inputs on the A and B buses. The bus where the effect is enabled is the foreground. Check the preview monitor to confirm that the graphic is over the intended background; if the roles are reversed, correct the bus or source assignment.
  4. Adjust the key. Turn EFFECTS A to adjust key amount and EFFECTS B to adjust edge blur. Watch the preview while making small adjustments, especially around small text and smooth or anti-aliased edges.
  5. Take it to program. When the composite looks right on preview, transition the program output as required for your production. To remove the key, press the same EFFECTS ON button again.

Choose between luminance and chroma key

Approach Graphic background Main consideration
Luminance key Solid black or white; use BLK-L-KEY or WHT-L-KEY, respectively. Any black or white areas in the text or artwork may also become transparent.
Chroma key Solid green or blue; Roland lists GRN-C.KEY and BLU-C.KEY. Lighting and parameter setup affect the edges; Roland cautions that color or small artifacts can remain around the extracted area.

For chroma-key menu navigation and Roland’s warning about edge artifacts, see its V-1HD chroma-key support article (published March 8, 2022). The menu options and instructions discussed here are for the original V-1HD; the V-1HD+ has its own product page and reference manual.

Troubleshoot common keying problems

  • The whole graphic rectangle is visible: Confirm that the key is enabled and matches the graphic’s actual background color. Check that the background is solid black or white as intended.
  • Text or parts of the artwork disappear: The keyed black or white may also be present in the artwork. Change those colors or use a different keying approach.
  • The graphic is behind the wrong image or does not appear: Check which bus has the effect enabled; that bus is the foreground. Recheck A/B source selections and inspect the preview output.
  • Green or blue fringes, or jagged edges: With chroma key, review the background’s lighting and the effect parameters. Roland notes that small edge artifacts or residual color can remain.
  • The preview looks wrong even though the source is correct: Verify the graphic and video inputs on both buses, then adjust key amount and edge blur while watching preview before transitioning to program.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your production also needs a prerecorded video to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a separate option from the V-1HD graphics workflow: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not live camera input. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
