Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer: put the video paths in a text file, one file directive per video, then give that playlist to FFmpeg as its input. This sends the files sequentially to YouTube Live from your EC2 instance. It works most simply when the clips have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases; clips that differ may need to be normalized or transcoded first.
1. Prepare the videos and playlist
Place the videos on the EC2 instance and create a plain-text playlist, for example /path/to/playlist.txt:
file '/path/to/video-01.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-02.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-03.mp4'
FFmpeg reads the entries in order. Use paths that exist on the instance and ensure the account running FFmpeg can read both the playlist and the media files. The concat demuxer is intended for files with matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases; listing files does not make incompatible media seamless or compatible. See the FFmpeg documentation.
When clips differ
Inspect the files before streaming. If their video or audio streams, codecs, or time bases differ, normalize them to a common format before concatenating. Re-encoding can align output properties but uses CPU; stream copy can reduce encoding work when the source streams already meet the concat requirements and YouTube output settings. These are engineering trade-offs, not a guarantee of a particular EC2 instance’s capacity. A practical community discussion also describes pre-transcoding heterogeneous files, but treat it as community advice rather than a normative guarantee: FFmpeg-user discussion, September 22, 2024.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Get YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. Use those values rather than guessing an endpoint; YouTube explains the stream key’s role and how to manage stream settings in its live stream settings help.
- Use RTMPS when the URL and your FFmpeg build support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers; see YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions.
Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of shared scripts, public logs, screenshots, and shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
3. Configure the encoder and start FFmpeg
This is a command skeleton, not a tested, one-size-fits-all command. Set its output codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio handling, and ingest URL for your media and stream. Protect the key by supplying it through a restricted environment variable or another private secret-management method rather than embedding it in a script you share.

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /path/to/playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
-re reads the files at their intended playback rate rather than as fast as possible. -f concat selects the concat demuxer. -safe 0 permits paths the demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe, so use it only with a playlist you control. The example selects H.264 video and AAC audio, but you must confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder and that the resulting settings suit the files and YouTube ingest.
Choose stream settings for the actual output
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Match the bitrate to the specific codec, resolution, and frame-rate row in YouTube’s live encoder settings. For example, its H.264 1080p30 row gives 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; those figures are specific to that row and are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that an EC2 instance or network path can sustain the output.

YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom over the combined primary and backup stream bitrate. On EC2, check sustained outbound throughput and encoder load using the intended media and settings. Instance needs vary with resolution, codec, encoding preset, number of simultaneous streams, and whether you transcode or copy streams, so the available information does not establish a suitable instance type. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
4. Verify playback and plan the run length
Start FFmpeg and check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming signal and stream-health messages. Confirm that the expected clip is playing and that audio is present before relying on the stream. The playlist processes entries sequentially; it does not, by itself, establish that a stream loops forever or that edits to the playlist will be picked up while FFmpeg is running. If you need a recurring or dynamically updated playlist, verify that behavior in your own workflow rather than assuming it.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as an archive guarantee for longer broadcasts; check Live Control Room behavior for the duration you plan. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream setup help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Troubleshoot common failures
- A later clip fails or the transition has timestamp artifacts: Confirm that the file paths are valid and the clips have matching stream properties. FFmpeg uses file durations to adjust timestamps between concat inputs; inaccurate durations can cause artifacts. Review the concat demuxer documentation.
- FFmpeg rejects the playlist or a path: Check playlist syntax, quoting, file permissions, and whether the path is accepted as safe. Use
-safe 0only for a playlist you control. - YouTube does not detect or accept the feed: Recheck the ingest URL and key in Live Control Room, protocol support in your FFmpeg build, and output codec and bitrate. Read the stream-health messages and keep credentials out of any logs you share. See YouTube’s stream settings help and encoder settings.
- The stream buffers or drops: Compare the output bitrate with sustained outbound capacity and retain YouTube’s recommended bandwidth margin. Check both network throughput and encoder load on the instance.
- The playlist does not repeat or reflect a new entry: The concat-demuxer guidance cited here establishes sequential reading, not live playlist refresh or infinite-loop behavior. Plan and test a restart or other playlist-management mechanism if your use case requires it.
6. Keep the content eligible to stream
Only include videos you have the rights to broadcast, including any music, game footage, or other embedded material that requires permission. Review YouTube’s current rules for live content and reused material before scheduling a playlist; a technically healthy encoder does not establish that the content is permitted. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist.
